Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to dive to a maximum depth of 30 metres using surface-supplied breathing apparatus (SSBA) and complete occupational post-dive activities. It includes the ability to check and connect equipment, prepare a dive plan, carry out an open water dive and post-dive equipment checks.

This unit applies to individuals who work as occupational divers in the seafood industry undertaking tasks in collecting or tending aquatic animals, cleaning and maintenance, retrieval and water sampling and pest control during diving operations.

Occupational licensing, legislative and certification requirements apply to this unit but vary according to state/territory requirements. Occupational diving is regulated independently by each state and territory workplace health and safety authority. Users are advised to check with the relevant authority to confirm current requirements.

1. Prepare for diving operations using SSBA

1.1 Select, check and prepare equipment for an SSBA diving operation

1.2 Ensure defective equipment is marked and removed from service by the person in charge of the diving operation

1.3 Don personal protective equipment and diving equipment appropriate to the type and duration of the dive in the correct sequence

1.4 Connect and check all surface-supply equipment for correct function, line-up and readiness

1.5 Connect and check the reserve air-supply equipment for correct function and readiness

1.6 Plan dive, select and check necessary tools, and conduct a risk assessment

1.7 Ensure the dive is recorded by the person in charge of the diving operation

2. Perform open water SSBA diving operations

2.1 Undertake open water SSBA diving operations to a maximum depth of 30 metres according to accepted industry occupational diving guidelines 

2.2 Follow decompression and emergency procedures according to industry occupational diving guidelines 

2.3 Undertake tender duties in an SSBA diving operation according to industry occupational diving guidelines and workplace procedures

2.4 Establish and maintain effective communication with surface and dive team

2.5 Operate SSBA while divers are in the water

3. Maintain effective work relationships within a dive team

3.1 Maintain effective teamwork during dive operations

3.2 Follow routine instructions according to dive plan and directions from team members

4. Complete activities after SSBA dive

4.1 Remove personal protective equipment and diving equipment on completion of the SSBA diving operation

4.2 Carry out post-dive equipment checks and report faults

4.3 Decontaminate, clean and store equipment according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has undertaken a diving operation in open water to a maximum depth of 30 metres using surface-supplied breathing apparatus (SSBA) on at least one occasion, including:

  • completing pre-dive equipment preparations and checks, operating, maintaining and storing equipment, including:
  • breathing apparatus – demand type (industry half masks, full masks and helmets) and free-flow type
  • buoyancy compensator
  • depth-measuring instruments
  • dive computer
  • diver's clothing
  • dive hose
  • communication systems
  • gauges
  • main and reserve air supplies
  • safety harness
  • shot-line
  • surface-supply panel
  • umbilicals
  • weights, fins and masks
  • preparing a dive plan and risk assessment
  • dressing and undressing correctly for SSBA diving operations
  • identifying dive-related emergency procedures in the event of an emergency
  • applying decompression principles, tables and procedures
  • performing assigned tender tasks
  • working effectively as a member in a dive team.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • function and operating method of equipment required for an SSBA diving operation
  • function and regulatory requirements of main and reserve air supplies
  • common equipment faults and consequences of incorrect use
  • correct dressing and undressing sequence for SSBA
  • testing, connection and maintenance procedures for SSBA
  • hazards associated with SSBA diving operations, and precautions to reduce risk
  • pressure values for different depths and awareness of pneumofathometer function
  • legislative, regulatory and industry requirements for SSBA
  • diving industry code of practice and guidelines
  • range of tender duties undertaken in an SSBA diving operation
  • methods to enter and exit the water
  • decompression principles, tables and procedures
  • anatomy, diving physics and physiology principles relevant to SSBA diving operations
  • principles of underwater communication systems
  • various SSBA configurations and their key features
  • diving-related medical conditions and their treatments
  • pre-dive and post-dive procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a diving environment or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • diving equipment, tools and accessories for SSBA diving operations
  • dive tables and dive-related information
  • proforma for developing a dive plan and risk assessment
  • specifications:
  • workplace procedures for performing SSBA diving operations that include advice on emergency situations
  • access to industry occupational diving guidelines
  • relationships:
  • evidence of interactions with dive team.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
