Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use basic monitoring equipment to test the water quality and environmental conditions for cultured and held stock.

The unit applies to individuals who carry out basic monitoring activities in an aquaculture setting under the direction of a supervisor.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. Licences may be required if operating vehicles or vessels.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for monitoring

1.1 Receive instructions for monitoring schedule from supervisor and confirm understanding

1.2 Collect required equipment, including personal protective equipment, and check for serviceability

2. Carry out monitoring

2.1 Perform water quality tests according to monitoring schedule

2.2 Check water quality parameters against acceptable range

2.3 Collect and prepare samples of water as instructed by supervisor

3. Complete monitoring activities

3.1 Clean work area and dispose of waste materials safely according to workplace procedures

3.2 Check and store tools and equipment, reporting any identified repair requirements to supervisor

3.3 Record relevant data and observations and report any abnormal records to supervisor

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has monitored water quality and environmental conditions for aquaculture stock on at least one occasion, including:

  • communicating with and reporting to supervisor on monitoring activities
  • using appropriate equipment, including personal protective equipment
  • completing required water quality tests and samples
  • operating and maintaining basic monitoring equipment
  • completing accurate records on monitoring observations
  • cleaning work area and equipment and storing tools and equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • workplace sampling and monitoring procedures for monitoring water quality and environmental conditions
  • operation of monitoring equipment
  • use and purpose of basic sampling equipment
  • environmental conditions to be monitored
  • basic water quality factors and their impact on stock
  • parameters to be monitored and accepted workplace ranges
  • safe work practices and environmental requirements relevant to monitoring water quality and environmental conditions.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in an aquaculture workplace or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • monitoring schedule
  • culture and sampling equipment for stock culture environment
  • personal protective equipment
  • culture or holding environment to monitor
  • data or recording sheets
  • specifications:
  • workplace procedures for monitoring environmental conditions
  • relationships:
  • evidence of interactions with supervisor.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
