Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to collect, pack and transport or transfer broodstock and seedstock in a way that minimises stress to stock. It does not include the collection of crocodiles or species from sea by qualified divers.

This unit applies to individuals who undertake routine tasks in collecting live stock from the wild and/or on-farm facilities for transport to an aquaculture facility under the direction of a supervisor.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. Licences may be required if diving or operating load-shifting equipment, vehicles or vessels.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for collection of stock

1.1 Receive and confirm instructions and workplace procedures for collection requirements with supervisor

1.2 Gather equipment and personal protective equipment and check for serviceability

1.3 Transfer equipment into collection vehicle and transport to collection area ready for use

2. Collect and transport stock

2.1 Collect and grade broodstock and seedstock according to workplace quantity and quality requirements

2.2 Pack broodstock or seedstock for transport according to workplace procedures

2.3 Transport broodstock or seedstock and transfer safely to culture or holding structures

2.4 Handle broodstock or seedstock in a way that minimises stress or damage

3. Complete post-collection activities

3.1 Clean work area and dispose of waste materials safely according to workplace procedures

3.2 Check and store tools and equipment, reporting any identified repair requirements to supervisor

3.3 Record relevant data and observations and report any abnormal records to supervisor

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has collected, packed and transported broodstock and seedstock on at least one occasion, including:

  • communicating and reporting to supervisor on collection activities
  • preparing and operating equipment used for collection and transport
  • handling, collecting, grading and packing live broodstock and seedstock to ensure minimal stress or damage
  • recording observations
  • cleaning work area and storing tools and equipment post-collection.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • basic characteristics of normal and abnormal behaviour of stock collected from the wild and/or on-farm facilities
  • main causes of stress and damage in stock, and methods to overcome these
  • operating methods and basic maintenance and repairs for collection, transport and holding equipment
  • biosecurity requirements relating to collecting broodstock and seedstock
  • workplace procedures for collecting broodstock and seedstock, including health and safety requirements relevant to the activity
  • workplace quantity and quality requirements for grading broodstock and seedstock
  • workplace reporting requirements for broodstock and seedstock collection.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in an aquaculture workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • personal protective equipment for collecting broodstock and seedstock
  • collection, transport and holding equipment
  • culture and holding structures
  • live broodstock or seedstock for collecting and packing
  • data or recoding sheets
  • specifications:
  • specific instructions and workplace procedures for collecting broodstock and seedstock
  • relationships:
  • evidence of interactions with supervisor.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
