This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to manage oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance in Drilling (Oil/Gas).

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply service and maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify, address and report potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be ready for fire/accident/emergency
1.6 Resolve coordination requirements with others prior to commencing and during work activities

2. Check new and used equipment
|
2.1 Test materials and equipment regularly
2.2 Monitor availability of new and used equipment
2.3 Evaluate costs/benefits of replacing equipment, and recommend/implement the purchase/lease of replacement equipment
2.4 Check stock levels and order spare parts and consumables
2.5 Maintain communication between operators, company and suppliers
2.6 Check manufacturer’s manuals/company procedures for currency and relevancy

3. Organise maintenance and overhauls
|
3.1 Determine type and frequency of maintenance tasks
3.2 Organise equipment maintenance and service to ensure availability is maintained and downtime minimised
3.3 Monitor performance of maintenance schedules and take corrective action if necessary
3.4 Arrange sources for obtaining back up or replacement equipment
3.5 Allocate personnel to carry out maintenance tasks

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient management of oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance including:
- apply legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures
- apply equipment/consumables order procedures
- apply reporting procedures
- works effectively with others to undertake and complete oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance that meets all of the required outcomes including:
- complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities
- demonstrates consistent timely completion of oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meets the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
- testing materials and equipment
- monitoring availability of new and used equipment
- applying cost benefit analysis
- managing stock levels and ordering spare parts and consumables
- checking manufacturer’s manuals/company procedures for currency and relevancy
- checking new and used equipment
- planning and organising maintenance and overhauls
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in managing oil and gas drilling equipment maintenance through:
- accessing, interpreting and applying legislative, organization and site requirements and procedures for:
- identifying and managing risks
- identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
- setting up work activity
- work health and safety
- identifying and correcting operational faults
- identifying equipment and ancillary attachment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitation
- identifying wear parts and relative frequency of replacement
- describing purpose of stock control
- interpreting financial transactions (e.g. cash flow, cost benefit analysis)
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
- an assessor must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through five (5) years of work in the Industry sector; and,
- where a co-assessment or partnership arrangement exists between a qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert, the Industry technical expert can hold the unit being assessed, and/or demonstrate equivalency of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate a minimum of three (3) years of continuous work in the Industry sector, with the preceding one (1) year in the unit they are co-assessing.
