This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to control operations in acid plant in Metalliferous mining.

1. Plan and prepare for control of acid plant operations
|
1.1. Access, interpret and apply acid plant operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2. Communicate with other personnel by approved methods
1.3. Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.4. Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the activity
1.5. Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
1.6. Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
1.7. Ensure area is well ventilated before entry into work area
1.8. Perform pre-start checks to ensure correct equipment operation

2. Manage acid plant operations
|
2.1. Monitor performance of acid plant components regularly
2.2. Regulate flow of substrate between process components to maximise production
2.3. Regulate heat exchangers
2.4. Handle acid plant products and reagents safely at all times
2.5. Monitor and adjust volume of gas through acid plant
2.6. Regulate gas impurity removal systems
2.7. Regulate by-product disposal
2.8. Monitor available acid plant storage capacity
2.9. Complete all required written documentation for shift handover
2.10. Pass on all shift information verbally or in writing to oncoming shift

3. Conduct housekeeping activities

3.1. Review plant performance with oncoming shift
3.2. Perform cleaning/housekeeping of plant and area and report associated hazards

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures
- implements requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective control of acid plant operations, including:
- selecting and using the required hand and power tools
- handle dangerous materials
- read and interpret instrumentation
- operate lift equipment (manual, cranes and loads)
- works with others to undertake and complete the control of acid plant operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:
- using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
- maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
- communicating to confirm work/plans/specifications
- passing on end of shift information
- reviewing plant performance with oncoming shift
- demonstrates consistent timely control of acid plant operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
- regulating the heat exchanger
- monitoring and adjusting volume of gas
- regulating gas impurity removal system
- monitor storage capacity
- regulating by-product disposal
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of controlling acid plant operations through:
- applying legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
- risk assessment and management
- statutory compliance
- work health and safety
- confined space entry
- identifying and handling dangerous materials
- applying wet and dry working procedures
- applying site procedures/site safety requirements
- applying WHS procedures
- applying operational procedures and checks
- interpreting equipment safety requirements
- using hazardous goods procedures and consequences of spills and identifying hazardous goods
- identifying repair requirements
- applying isolation procedures
- applying emergency procedures
- identifying environmental procedures
- applying breakdown procedures
- reading and interpreting instrumentation/interpret reports
- identifying and diagnosing faults
- using lift (manual, cranes and loads)
- maintaining records
- applying safe work practices
- identifying and using hand and power tools
- applying contaminant identification
- identifying sources of acid plant materials
- interpreting gas purification process
- interpreting drying process

Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
- an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent.
