This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct operations with skid steer loaders using attachments in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.

1. Plan and prepare for skid steer loader operations
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply skid steer loader operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
1.5 Obtain, identify and implement traffic signage requirements
1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks that are consistent with the requirements of the job, check them for serviceability and rectify or report any faults
1.7 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Operate skid steer loader
|
2.1 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
2.2 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
2.3 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
2.4 Drive and operate loader, and modify the operating technique to meet changing work conditions

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of skid steer loader operations with attachments including:
- identifying the components and specific actions of a skid steer
- identifying skid steer loader tasks
- conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
- carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
- applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
- selecting and using the required tools, equipment and attachments
- working safely around other machines and personnel
- demonstrates completion of conducting skid steer loader operations using attachments that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
- driving, manoeuvring and operating skid steer loader smoothly, adjusting operations for the work environment conditions
- performing skid steer loading tasks which must include a minimum of one (1) of the following on each occasion:
- stripping/spreading topsoil and materials
- backfilling
- loading vehicles
- excavations
- mixing materials
- site clean up
- compacting
- truck excavation
- lifting and carrying materials
- cutting batters and benches
- rock breaking and any activities associated with attachments listed below
- using communication systems to confirm activity, correct path and process to safely move and transport load
- positioning skid steer loader ensuring stability in operations
- loading materials
- shifting and placing materials
- selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing a minimum of one (1) of the following attachments on each occasion:
- multipurpose bucket
- forks
- dozer blade
- backhoe
- auger
- chain digger
- power broom
- profiler
- tiller/mixer
- rotary hoe
- hammer
- asphalt cutter/saw
- concrete cutter/saw
- rake
- loading and unloading skid steer loader from float/trailer
- park up, shut down and prepare machine for maintenance
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting operations with skid steer loaders using attachments:
- accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
- driving and operating equipment
- materials handling using safety data sheets
- environmental protection
- ground conditions,
- isolation procedures
- equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
- fire/accident/emergency
- signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed
- site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities
- project quality requirements
- calculating safe working loads
- operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics
- housekeeping activities
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing: and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
- assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
- assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
- assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
- where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
- assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
