This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct wheeled dozer operations in Coal and Metalliferous mining, Civil construction and Extractive.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for wheeled dozer operations
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply wheeled dozer operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
1.5 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete the allocated work
1.6 Inspect and prepare work area in coordination with others
1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Operate wheeled dozer
|
2.1 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during the work activity
2.2 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up shutdown and secure equipment procedures
2.3 Control speed and articulated steering of the wheeled dozer during tramming operations
2.4 Use dozer controls and functions effectively, including manoeuvre attachments to complete tasks
2.5 Carry out towing of equipment and plant safely within equipment and/or connection capabilities
2.6 Maintain safe grip, traction and productivity in varied operating conditions
2.7 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
2.8 Complete work plan, within the operating capacities of equipment

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of wheeled dozer operations including:
- conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
- carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
- driving and operating the equipment to site conditions
- applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
- applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques
- carrying out towing and pushing of equipment and plant
- selecting and using the required tools and equipment
- working safely around other machines and personnel
- works effectively with others to undertake and complete wheeled dozer operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:
- using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
- maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
- demonstrates completion of conducting wheeled dozer operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
- EITHER completing a minimum of three (3) wheeled dozer operations in coal mining or metalliferous mining or extractive Industry , including:
- manoeuvring dozer
- blade application
- ripper application
- towing and pushing
- pushing and preparing overburden
- bench and pad preparation
- trimming and cutting
- building and maintaining stockpiles
- attaching, securing, lifting, carrying and placing materials
- supporting other vehicles
- OR completing a minimum of three (3) wheeled dozer operations working in dumps , including:
- manoeuvring dozer
- blade application
- ripper application
- creation of windrows
- dump establishment
- OR completing a minimum of three (3) wheeled dozer operations working in civil works , including:
- manoeuvring dozer
- blade application
- ripper application
- towing and pushing
- road works
- contours
- batters
- rehabilitation and drainage
- final landform and the interpretation of associated survey pegs
- sealing tailing dams
- attaching, securing, lifting, carrying and placing materials
- AND working safely around:
- overhead power lines
- other machines and personnel
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting wheeled dozer operations:
- communicating and performing isolation procedures
- identifying equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
- interpreting plans, reports, maps, specifications
- identifying, interpreting and using geological and technical data (basic)
- identifying signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed
- applying dozer operational procedures and techniques (including towing and pushing)
- applying operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics
- completing housekeeping activities
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
- assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
- assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
- assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
- where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
- assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

Where this Unit is being assessed outside of the Resources and Infrastructure Sectors assessor and/or Industry subject matter expert experience should be in-line with industry standards for the sector in which it is being assessed and where no Industry standard is specified should comply with any relevant regulation.

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
