This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct tracked dozer operations in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for tracked dozer operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply tracked dozer operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret clarify and confirm work plan

1.3 Identify and address risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete the allocated job

1.6 Inspect and prepare work area in coordination with others

1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Operate the tracked dozer

2.1 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown, and secure equipment procedures

2.2 Determine equipment capacity and operate equipment within capacity

2.3 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity

2.4 Drive dozer, select and modify the operating technique to meet changing work conditions

2.5 Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms, and ensure efficiency of operation

2.6 Connect and tow/push equipment and plant within the equipment and connection capacity

2.7 Continually monitor hazards and risks , and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment

3. Carry out operator maintenance

3.1 Prepare machine for maintenance

3.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding

3.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks

3.4 Return machine to service

3.5 Process written maintenance records

4. Conduct housekeeping activities

4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

4.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of tracked dozer operations including:
  • conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
  • carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
  • driving and operating the equipment to site conditions
  • applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
  • applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques
  • carrying out towing and pushing of equipment and plant
  • selecting and using the required tools and equipment
  • working safely around other machines and personnel
  • works effectively with others to undertake and complete tracked dozer operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:
  • using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
  • maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • demonstrates consistent timely completion of tracked dozer operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • completing a minimum of three (3) tracked dozer operations , including:
  • manoeuvring dozer
  • blade application
  • ripper application
  • towing and pushing
  • building and maintaining stockpiles
  • attaching, securing, lifting, carrying and placing materials
  • working safely around:
  • high bench walls
  • overhead power lines
  • other machines and personnel
  • live stockpiles

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting tracked dozer operations through:

  • communicating and performing isolation procedures
  • identifying equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
  • interpreting plans, reports, maps, specifications
  • identifying, interpreting and using geological and technical data (basic)
  • identifying signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed identifying
  • applying dozer operational procedures and techniques (including towing and pushing)
  • applying operational maintenance and basic diagnostics
  • completing housekeeping activities

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing: and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • assessor requirements differ between sectors as follows:
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Metalliferous Mining sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Coal Mining sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through twelve (12) month work experience in an Industry relevant to the skills being assessed within the last three (3) years; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must demonstrate competency in the unit being assessed, and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of twelve (12) months’ work experience within the last three (3) years; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Extractive sector
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience.
