Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct paver screeding operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply paver screeding operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements

1.6 Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements

1.7 Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Set up paver screed

2.1 Set equipment to the correct levels to lay material on surface

2.2 Set electronic levelling equipment to check level

2.3 Set heating controls for screed

2.4 Set screed controls for correct operation

3. Operate paver screed

3.1 Adjust screed during operation as required

3.2 Identify faults in the mat and take correct action to rectify faults

3.3 Monitor work of rake hands and rollers to ensure they are keeping up with the paver

3.4 Maintain communication with paver operator monitoring the progress of the job

3.5 Notify paver operator of problems with the mat

3.6 Perform operator maintenance

4. Clean up

4.1 Handle/dispose of waste material

4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

4.3 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment

4.4 Carry out housekeeping requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of paver screeding operations including:
  • selecting and using required tools and equipment
  • correctly setting levels, temperature controls and screed controls
  • using electronic equipment to check levels
  • making screed adjustments
  • identifying and correcting faults in mat
  • monitoring rake hands and rollers
  • works effectively with others to undertake and complete paver screeding operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • organising work activities to meet all task requirements
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone
  • notifying paver operator of problems with the mat
  • demonstrates consistent timely completion of paver screeding operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • identifying and reporting hazards and risks
  • conducting paver screeding operations in a minimum of two (2) different bituminous material types/surface types including the following to required thickness, uniformity, line and level, on both matching and unsupported edge in accordance with project specifications and/or work instructions:
  • three (3) longitudinal joints (of at least 100m)
  • six (6) transverse joints
  • five sections of straight paving (one of at least 100 linear metres)
  • three intersections
  • one of the above tasks to include at least one mode of automatic screed levelling

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting paver screeding operations through:

  • applying legislative, organisational and site requirements and procedures for:
  • site and equipment safety requirements
  • paver screed operations
  • aggregate types and sizes
  • bituminous materials
  • longitudinal and transverse joints
  • safe operating techniques in all terrain
  • housekeeping
  • equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
  • applying and monitoring operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures
  • applying site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities
  • applying processes for the calculation of material uniformity and travel speed
  • safety data sheets and materials handling methods
  • monitoring project quality requirements
  • preparing and/or implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience.
