Qualification Description

This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required for individuals licensed to operate as a jockey and compete in industry-regulated events in the thoroughbred racing code.

Jockeys are athletes who ride racehorses at race meetings, barrier trials and trackwork. A jockey possesses the highest level of race riding skills, requiring a high degree of decision-making skill and reaction time during races, and the ability to exercise judgement when choosing mounts and assessing horse form.

This qualification is required for industry licensing and registration in some states and territories. Refer to the relevant state or territory Principal Racing Authority for current requirements including selection into an apprentice jockey program.

Entry Requirements

To commence this qualification an individual must:

  • have completed RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider)

or

  • demonstrated skills and experience in riding and handling thoroughbred horses commensurate with the RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider)

Packaging Rules

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:

  • 17 units of competency:
  • 14 core units plus
  • 3 elective units.

Elective units must ensure the integrity of the qualification’s Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome. The electives are to be chosen as follows:

  • at least 1 elective unit from the electives list
  • up to 2 from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
