Modification History

Release 1. Unit code and title changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBTECH502 Review and analyse production trials and specify retrials.

Application

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to review and analyse production trials and specify retrials. It applies to trials of new or modified products, processes and equipment.

This unit applies to a senior technician or technologist working alone or as part of a team.

The unit principally refers to the theoretical and process knowledge required to conduct an analysis of production trial results. The technician is not required to demonstrate 'hands on' operation of equipment as part of this competency.

No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Pre-requisite Unit

MSMOPS401 Trial new process or product.

Competency Field

Technical.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Review trial results

1.1 Confirm trial objectives as basis for comparison prior to review of results

1.2 Review trial product quality results and compare with trial objectives to identify variations

1.3 Review trial production results and compare with trial objectives to identify variations

2. Analyse and correct trial outcome

2.1 Analyse trial results to establish priorities for correction of parameters that are outside specifications

2.2 Recommend changes to achieve product quality and production requirements

2.3 Make changes to procedures to achieve the required product quality and production requirements

3. Specify and carry out retrial procedures

3.1 Specify retrial objectives and priorities

3.2 Carry out retrial variations to achieve trial objectives

3.3 Record and report on trial results according to workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.

  • Numeracy skills to calculate and interpret statistics, product formulae and process conditions
  • Reading skills to interpret trial purpose
  • Writing and oral communication skills to record and report on trial processes and results and specify retrial requirements.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Assessment requirements

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code and title changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBTECH502 Review and analyse production trials and specify retrials.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit of competency, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • analyse production trials at least once and identify limitations and recommend changes for one or more of the following:
  • materials, materials grade
  • product specifications/design
  • process/processing parameters
  • machine configuration or specification
  • mould, die and/or tooling design and construction.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • characteristics and manufacturing behaviours of polymers involved in the process
  • polymer materials, their additives and the rheological, heat and other effects of processing to the design of equipment and components to predict practical performance results
  • preliminary product specifications
  • quality and production requirements
  • organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
  • hazards that may arise in the job or work environment and:
  • their possible causes
  • potential consequences
  • appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
