Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code and title changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBPROD282 Assemble mould.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assemble and dismantle moulds typically used in the rotational moulding, urethane foam, thermoforming and composites sectors.

This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.

The unit principally refers to the operator performing typical tasks associated with mould component reassembly, such as setting up and dismantling moulds, replacing worn parts and maintaining stock levels of mould parts.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Check work requirements

1.1 Identify type of product required and any special requirements from job specifications

1.2 Identify mould parts required from job specifications

1.3 Interpret mould and part dimensions from job specifications

1.4 Perform housekeeping tasks to prepare for work to be undertaken

1.5 Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards

2. Assemble mould

2.1 Verify required mould parts against job specifications

2.2 Use mould set-up jig to support mould assembly

2.3 Assemble mould according to job requirements

2.4 Check position of mould in relation to rest of machine to ensure mould will produce correct output

2.5 Check mould will open and close

2.6 Apply suitable release agent

2.7 Check breather/vent system for safe functioning

2.8 Pack breather/vent system with material to avoid spillages

3. Dismantle mould

3.1 Apply mould dismantling jig to support dismantling process

3.2 Dismantle mould according to standard dismantling procedures

3.3 Strip mould of release agent

3.4 Clean mould to remove contaminants

3.5 Dry out mould in preparation for storage

3.6 Store mould parts according to workplace storage procedures

4. Inspect and maintain mould parts

4.1 Inspect equipment to identify worn parts and assess overall condition

4.2 Replace worn mould parts based on inspection results

4.3 Accurately record details of worn parts

5. Maintain mould part stocks

5.1 Check stocks of spare parts against expected stock levels

5.2 Advise supervisor of stock required, parts used and date of completed mould

6. Respond to process control variances

6.1 Recognise and log process control variances and their causes

6.2 Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes

6.3 Accurately maintain records and logbooks

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.

  • Numeracy skills to interpret technical information and check and report on stock levels.
  • Reading skills to interpret specifications and workplace procedures.
  • Writing and oral communication skills to record and report on mould assembly operations.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • reassemble production mould components at least once to meet job specifications.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • the functions of mould components
  • the principles of mould operations
  • types of release agents and their application
  • typical tools and equipment involved in the reassembly of production mould components
  • criteria for confirming appropriate condition of mould parts
  • production workflows
  • stock management techniques and procedures
  • key variables that may affect product quality and production output
  • typical process and product problems, as listed below, including early warning signs, possible causes and corrective actions:
  • moulds mismatched with production requirements
  • incorrect selection, use or positioning of mould parts
  • unserviced moulds
  • worn or damaged mould parts
  • organisational procedures relevant to the work environment or job role
  • hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
  • their possible causes
  • potential consequences
  • appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
