Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use finishing and assembly processes and equipment to prepare components and products for use by customers or in secondary manufacturing processing.
This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.
The unit principally refers to finishing to cover a range of secondary value-adding processes such as trimming, grinding, applying protective coatings and inspecting the product for expected and unexpected imperfections. It also refers to cleaning, sorting, assembly and reworking of minor surface imperfections.
No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

1. Check work requirements and prepare for work |
1.1 Identify requirements from job specifications and assemble equipment and other required items 1.2 Confirm work planning process by consulting workplace procedures and safety data sheets 1.3 Ensure safety equipment is available and in good operational condition according to equipment specifications 1.4 Remove products from equipment according to handling procedures 1.5 Identify end of production run and cease production according to job specifications and workplace procedures |
2. Check quality of product |
2.1 Inspect product to identify finishing requirements 2.2 Identify and report significant finning, flashing or other quality problems 2.3 Modify finishing process to amend output, and verify changes result in acceptable quality outputs 2.4 Identify and process nonconforming products according to quality management procedures |
3. Perform finishing operation |
3.1 Trim product according to job specifications 3.2 Undertake other finishing processes including application of protective coatings and secondary process operations according to job specifications 3.3 Apply waste management and recycling strategies according to workplace procedures 3.4 Inspect finished product for suitability for further processing, for customer delivery or for remediation, according to job specifications and workplace procedures 3.5 Assemble and sort finished products to meet delivery requirements 3.6 Prepare finished packages for transfer according to handling and packing procedures 3.7 Accurately record product data 3.8 Clean equipment and work area and perform other housekeeping tasks |
