Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to implement and manage environmental management policies.

It includes consulting with stakeholders effectively, interpreting complex information and maintaining environmental records. It also includes implementing and monitoring procedures for quantifying environmental impacts, controlling risks and dealing with environmental incidents.

This unit applies to those working as managers with responsibility for environmental management within the organisation. Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously, supervising staff, while performing sophisticated tasks in a range of familiar contexts.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and includes:

  • applying control procedures
  • applying enterprise environmental policies
  • applying relevant legislative requirements
  • assessing and managing risks
  • assessing environmental risks
  • collecting, recording, assessing and reporting data associated with the performance of the environmental management plan
  • consulting and communicating with internal and external groups and/or individuals
  • gathering and interpreting information relating to environmental management
  • implementing environmental management plans in consultation with relevant stakeholders
  • managing activities associated with the implementation and management of environmental management policies, plans, procedures and programs
  • managing records
  • monitoring the effective implementation of environmental management plans
  • responding to emergencies
  • taking effective steps to ensure the remediation of environmental problems or impacts

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and includes knowledge of:

  • economic systems and development needs
  • enterprise consultation processes
  • enterprise emergency response requirements
  • relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • work health and safety legislation

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation including legislation, regulations, codes of practice, workplace procedures and operation manuals.
