Release 1. This is the first release of this unit of competency in the NWP National Water Training Package.

Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to monitor, inspect and report catchment areas.

It includes monitoring flows, coordinating catchment areas and collecting data and samples. It also includes monitoring and adjusting regulatory systems, identifying and investigating catchment problems and producing reports.

This unit applies to field staff with a specific responsibility for inspecting, monitoring and reporting catchment areas. Those undertaking this unit would work under appropriate supervision while performing routine tasks ensuring minimum damage to the environment, in a familiar context. The level of responsibility may vary according to the size and complexity of the catchment area.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and includes:

  • assessing and reporting on the condition of the catchment area
  • collecting samples
  • completing documentation
  • coordinating safety
  • identifying and addressing risks and hazards
  • identifying and reporting on flows into the catchment area
  • identifying catchment faults
  • inspecting and adjusting flow regulating systems
  • inspecting and monitoring catchment areas
  • inspecting catchment areas and identifying water quality risks
  • measuring flow and capacity
  • monitoring and integrating catchments processes
  • monitoring and reporting organisational guideline breaches
  • monitoring catchment and collecting and reporting catchment data
  • monitoring flows
  • organising pest eradication
  • using safety equipment and personal protective equipment

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and includes knowledge of:

  • catchment layout and processes
  • communication systems
  • coordination processes
  • effects of weather and conditions on operation of catchment areas
  • environmental aspects of catchment areas
  • inspection requirements of catchments
  • pest control specifications
  • relevant by-laws and legislation
  • relevant regulations and workplace procedures
  • relevant water industry guidelines
  • risk factors and potential hazards involved with catchment area processes, equipment operation, capacity and limitations

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation including legislation, regulations, codes of practice, workplace procedures and operation manuals.
