Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and appropriately handle woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics and other textile materials and accessories used in the textiles, clothing and footwear industries. Accessories may include items such as threads, fastening and trims.

This unit applies to individuals who require basic knowledge of fabrics and textile materials for use in production, cleaning or repair roles. It should be contextualised for use in different industry sectors.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • correctly interpret workplace information about three different types of fabrics or textiles
  • for five types of fabrics or textiles:
  • correctly identify fabric or textile from its visual and physical properties
  • match fabric or textile to a suitable application or process
  • match fabric or textile to two suitable accessories
  • check fabric or textile and identify basic faults.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • types of information about fabrics and textiles used in the workplace:
  • product information
  • labels
  • work instructions involving technical information
  • basic aspects of woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics:
  • how to identify different fabric types
  • properties and how these impact appearance or process
  • performance of different fabrics & related care and handling considerations
  • how to spot flaws
  • existence of Australian Standards for care labelling
  • common end uses of woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics
  • basic informal fabric performance tests commonly used in the workplace
  • basic characteristics of textiles other than fabrics used in the workplace
  • accessories used in textile products:
  • types, including threads, fastenings and trims
  • suitability for different applications and processes
  • current and emerging trends in fabrics and their applications.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • work information about fabrics and textiles
  • fabrics and textiles.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
