Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code, Title and Application changed. Title changed for clarity and consistency. One prerequisite unit removed. Elements and Performance Criteria simplified with Element 1 and 2 combined. Foundation Skills field populated. Range of Conditions removed with relevant information moved to Knowledge Evidence. Assessment Requirements clarified with generic foundation skills statements moved to appropriate section and duplication with Performance Criteria removed. Supersedes and is not equivalent to MSTCL4001 Perform sample machining of advanced construction garments.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret design specifications and use advanced construction techniques to perform sewing and finishing operations to complete whole garments, which may be design samples. The focus of the unit is on the skills to use multiple types of machines to produce garments which require use of advanced techniques either because of design feature details or more complex construction and assembly requirements.

This unit applies to individuals working independently who are responsible for their own outcomes and who may have some responsibility for the work of others.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Pre-requisite Unit

MSTAT3005 Sew garments

Competency Field

Apparel and Textile Production

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Establish work requirements

1.1 Analyse design specifications to identify construction requirements

1.2 Examine garment components for compliance with design and production specifications and make required adjustments

1.3 Determine construction requirements and plan sequence of operations

1.4 Prepare equipment and working area in accordance with job requirements

2. Construct and finish garment

2.1 Use techniques according to requirements of pattern, component detail and design specifications

2.2 Use and maximise features and capabilities of machines to achieve required outcome and quality standards

2.3 Regularly check performance of machine for signs of faulty operation and make required adjustments

2.4 Finish garment to required standard and inspect against design and production specifications

3. Review design and production processes

3.1 Identify garment construction problems, and document feedback to designers and patternmakers

3.2 Share informed ideas about garment construction with colleagues using positive and constructive communication techniques

3.3 Review production processes to assess timing and task requirements and identify alternative processes to achieve more efficient or effective outcomes

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • Reading skills to interpret design specifications
  • Oral communication skills to provide constructive feedback and liaise with others on operational matters
  • Numeracy skills to work with spatial and measurement concepts in production specifications

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.

Unit Mapping Information

No equivalent unit.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • use advanced construction techniques to produce at least three garments to workplace quality standards, with work across the three garments to involve:
  • use of at least three different fabrics
  • operation of at least three of the following types of machines:
  • plain lockstitch sewing machine
  • three, four or five thread overlocker
  • zigzag sewing machine
  • blind hemmer
  • buttonholer
  • pocket and or collaring machine
  • elasticator
  • binder
  • moulder
  • at least four of the following in any combination:
  • boned strapless bodice
  • contoured and layered insets
  • cut-in and applied pockets and tabs
  • embellishments by hand that are detailed and precise
  • embellishments by machine
  • garment mounting
  • intricate closures and seaming
  • lined garment
  • multiple interfacings or interlinings
  • tailored collar
  • tailored pocket.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • types of design and construction specifications for garments requiring use of advanced techniques
  • set-up and operation of at least three different machines and associated safety considerations
  • characteristics, quality indicators and acceptable tolerances for:
  • tailored features
  • structured foundations
  • hand embellishments, including beading and smocking
  • machine embellishments, including quilting, pintucking, shirring, appliqué and lace insertion or application
  • common construction problems when using advanced techniques and how these are addressed
  • garment finishing tasks
  • communication techniques for effective collaboration.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • design and construction specifications
  • garment components
  • machines and consumables.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
