Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lay up fabric and cut work as part of the textile production process in situations involving complex patterns, multiple layers, step layers and two-way markers. Fabrics may have directional patterns. Work may be completed using manual or computer-aided techniques.

This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures using discretion and judgement to manage tasks involving some complexity.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Competency Field

Apparel and Textile Production

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to cut complicated fabrics and lays

1.1 Determine lay-up and cutting requirements from work specifications

1.2 Identify and comply with workplace health and safety requirements

1.3 Prepare equipment and working area in accordance with job requirements

1.4 Obtain fabric and marker and confirm suitability to meet specifications

2. Lay up fabric and position marker

2.1 Lay up fabric, check lay height and position of fabric according to requirements of cutting equipment and work specifications

2.2 Place marker on lay, check marker and lay alignment and take appropriate action according to job specification

3. Cut work

3.1 Safely operate equipment and cut lay to meet specifications

3.2 Inspect cut work, identify any faults and rectify any deficiencies

3.3 Monitor performance of cutting equipment for signs of faulty operation and take required action to rectify performance

4. Complete work

4.1 Complete and store production documentation in accordance with workplace procedures

4.2 Perform routine maintenance on cutting equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures

4.3 Clean work area and process unused fabric for recycling or safe disposal to minimise waste

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • Reading skills to interpret familiar workplace procedures and work documentation
  • Writing skills to communicate simple factual information in familiar work documents
  • Numeracy skills to interpret numerical information in specifications and use estimating skills to manipulate pattern pieces

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • lay up and cut pattern pieces for at least two textile products that involve the following in any combination:
  • multiple pieces of varying shapes (at least eight)
  • two-way markers
  • step layers.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • factors that contribute to complexity of the lay-up and cutting process and how these are addressed:
  • articles that involve multiple pieces and a variety of shapes
  • fabrics with directional patterns
  • different types of woven and knit fabrics with characteristics that have significant impact on how the lay-up and cutting process is undertaken
  • two-way markers
  • step layers
  • types, characteristics, applications and limitations of the following types of cutting equipment, including safety considerations for their use:
  • round blade cutter
  • straight knife cutter
  • drills
  • computerised cutting machine
  • laser cutters
  • ways of minimising waste
  • types of information that may need to be recorded in production documentation.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • work specifications
  • pattern pieces
  • fabrics
  • lay-up and cutting equipment
  • workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
