This unit of competency covers dismantling and removing the frame from artwork, including memorabilia, and analysing its documentation and taking client instructions before undertaking the work.

Prepare for work |
1.1 |
Work instructions and discussion with the client are used to identify the reasons for de-framing the item, and parts of the framed item or the original framing materials that are to be retained |

Work health and safety (WHS) requirements, including personal protection needs, are observed throughout the work |

Frame is examined to identify its composition, condition and type of construction, production techniques, fixing and fasteners used and de-framing and restoration procedures |

Tools and equipment are selected to match construction and fastener type and checked prior to use to ensure that they are appropriate for the work in terms of quality, serviceability and safety |

Safe and suitable work area is selected/prepared to de-frame, sort and protect the items |

Dismantling sequence and handling techniques are determined |

2.1 |
Original frame assembly is dismantled to the extent required in the work instructions using appropriate tools and procedures |

Labels, fasteners and attachments are removed and stored |

Components are separated, protected, tagged and stored following workplace procedures |

Condition of de-framed object is examined and noted for the work order |

Relevant historical information is collated and filed |

Clean work area and complete operations |

Equipment is cleaned, inspected for serviceable condition and stored appropriately |

Equipment faults are identified, tagged and reported to appropriate personnel |

Work area is cleaned and rubbish disposed of as appropriate |

Workplace documentation is completed as required |
