Application

This unit of competency covers preparing, assembling and finishing a basic furnishing project.

It is designed for use in a pre-employment skills introduction program and is suitable for use in institutional-based vocational programs. Skills development will take place under direct supervision.

This unit is not to be used in a traineeship or apprenticeship training program or associated qualifications. It is only to be used in pre-employment programs and carries no credit towards apprenticeship/trade and other qualification types in manufacturing and furnishings.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Determine drawing requirements

3.1

Research different methods of producing drawings

Decide on methods and conventions for naming and saving new or modified drawings

Create project drawings

4.1

Produce drawings of the project that is to be completed using either CAD systems or hand drawing equipment

Review drawings with trainer/instructor and peers

Modify drawings as required in response to the feedback provided

Produce an items and materials list using either the CAD system computer software or by hand

Plan the manufacture of the product

Determine the machines, tools and equipment required and WHS/PPE requirements

Determine the sequence of individual component manufacture and measures needed to protect manufactured components from damage

Develop a sequence for the assembly of the project

Get advice and approval for the project and plan

Manufacture the product

Follow safe work practices and procedures

Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times

Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with procedures

Manufacture and store components and acquire stock components according to the developed plan

Assemble product according to the developed and approved plan using appropriate hand and power tools and equipment

Check for conformance to requirements throughout the manufacture and assembly process

Complete work requirements

7.1

Clear work area of waste and clean according to requirements

Maintain and/or store machines, tools and equipment according to instructions

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

  • following work instructions, procedures and safe work practices
  • applying safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including the use of PPE
  • selecting furnishing materials for the project
  • selecting furnishing components for the project
  • determining appropriate joining methods for furnishing materials and components
  • producing drawings of an assembled project and its components
  • planning the manufacture of a furnishing project, including all necessary calculations
  • producing components according to created drawing requirements
  • assembling project, including using tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner
  • inspecting finished project against quality requirements
  • tidying/cleaning work area as appropriate
  • returning tools, equipment and project items to designated storage areas and/or conditions.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures in a furniture making environment and use of PPE
  • sources of information on furnishing materials and components
  • sources of information on furnishing projects
  • furnishing drawing practices
  • methods of joining timber and engineered board
  • need for drawings that others can follow.

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator
  • have vocational competency in undertaking a basic furniture making project at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience.
  • Assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic workplace situations.
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required to complete the project.
  • Project should include the use of a number of materials, tools, joining methods and complexity expected of a learner entering the furnishing industry.
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
