Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare and install timber strip flooring, ply and reconstituted timber sheet product directly onto joists, install decking directly onto joists and remove and replace boards in an existing timber floor directly onto joists.

Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.

The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

1. Determine job requirements

1.1 Interpret timber flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required

1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating

1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures

1.4 Gather the timber flooring material and confirm its species, grade, size, quantity and quality against job instructions

1.5 Check and confirm the timber flooring material’s moisture content is suitable for site conditions according to workplace procedures

1.6 Gather fasteners and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions

2. Cut, fit and fasten the timber flooring

2.1 Erect signage and/or barricades according to workplace procedures

2.2 Inspect the joists for flatness, structural integrity and cleanliness and confirm they are suitable for installing the timber flooring, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures

2.3 Measure, mark and cut timber flooring materials to length and size according to job instructions, to minimise waste and joints and to ensure an efficient, quality installation

2.4 Install the timber flooring according to the manufacturer instructions

2.5 Install finishing strips appropriate for the type of timber flooring

2.6 Check the timber flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies

2.7 Make any necessary preparations for sanding and finishing the timber flooring according to job instructions

3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures

3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste

3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools

3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials

3.4 Complete task outcome documentation

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks in the elements and performance criteria of this unit of competency and has demonstrated the ability to complete according to job instructions:

  • one installation of 19 mm strip timber flooring directly onto joists to an area of at least five joist spaces and at least one metre wide
  • one installation of a ply or reconstituted timber sheet product directly onto joists an area of at least five joist spaces and at least one metre wide
  • one installation of 19 mm decking directly onto joists comprising an area of at least five joist spaces and at least one metre wide
  • the removal and replacement of a board in an existing timber floor directly onto joists.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • AS 1684 Residential Timber Framed Construction as it applies to the installation of timber flooring
  • manufacturer installation instructions for:
  • strip timber flooring (19 mm or thicker)
  • decking boards
  • plywood
  • particleboard
  • manufacturer use instructions for polyurethane and polymer adhesives
  • the safe and correct use of, and maintenance requirements for tools and equipment for, installing timber flooring on joists
  • the most common issues that can arise when installing timber flooring on joists and how to avoid and respond to them
  • workplace policies and procedures relevant to their job role and responsibilities including for:
  • installing timber flooring on joists
  • communication and reporting
  • environmental protection and sustainability, including maximising resource utilisation and minimising waste
  • quality indicators for completed work and process improvements
  • work health and safety, including the use of personal protective equipment and safety data sheets
  • work planning
  • how to identify if joists are suitable for installing timber flooring
  • how to identify if timber flooring is installed correctly on joists.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • locations with joints on which to install timber flooring
  • timber flooring and other materials required by job instructions
  • equipment and tools required for the activities set out in the elements and performance criteria, including those to control hazards
  • job instructions and workplace procedures.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
