Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Supersedes and is equivalent to MSFFL2037 Install unpatterned tufted carpet. Changes to application, elements and performance criteria to improve clarity and consistency across MSFFL units. Changes to assessment requirements.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, lay out, cut, join, stretch, fasten, trim and finish unpatterned tufted carpet. It does not include the installation of:

  • soft carpet underlay and grippers (which MSFFL3103 Install soft carpet underlay and grippers addresses)
  • carpet using the direct-stick or dual-bond methods (which MSFFL3110 Install adhesive-fixed carpet addresses)
  • carpet on complex stairs (which MSFFL3113 Install carpet on complex stairs addresses).

Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions including plans and specifications and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.

The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks in the elements and performance criteria of this unit of competency and has demonstrated the ability to install according to job instructions:

  • two types of unpatterned tufted carpet — where the subfloor has been adequately prepared — in two connecting rooms, including at least one seam join and one cross join
