Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to complete freehand sketches to illustrate or communicate information to be used in engineering drafting applications. It includes the use of standard drawing conventions and techniques to represent the subject in appropriate proportion and view. Sketches can be used as part of the drafting process to illustrate or communicate information about design, worksite, layout plan or construction features and the unit includes the ability to apply standard drawing conventions to sketching 2D orthogonal and pictorial freehand drawings and sectional views.

This unit is suitable for those working within a computer-aided design (CAD) or drafting work environment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

  • neat presentation.

Construction techniques include one or more of the following:

  • construction of angles at 90, 45, 30, 60, 75 and 15 degrees

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • determining the job scope and sketch requirements through consultation with relevant personnel
  • producing an initial simple freehand sketch on at least two occasions using standard drawing conventions and identifying and labelling to confirm currency and purpose
  • confirming sketch is a proportional presentation of subject with relevant personnel
  • producing freehand orthogonal sketches and sectional views to communicate or illustrate subject for further drafting work on at least two occasions
  • conducting required calculations to ensure correct dimensions and proportions
  • complying with organisational policies and procedures, including quality requirements.

Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures
  • drawing conventions
  • drawing techniques
  • drawing projection techniques
  • drawing construction techniques relevant to freehand sketching
  • different approaches to drawing at an overview level
  • techniques, methods and principles of technical drawing
  • copyright and intellectual property issues and legislation in relation to drawing at an overview level
  • quality assurance procedures
  • principles of plane geometry
  • sketch construction including pictorial axes, pictorial angles, pictorial lines, non-pictorial lines and pictorial circles and arcs
  • four centre method
  • ordinate method including sectioning pictorial shapes
  • pictorial drawing including isometric, oblique (cabinet and cavalier), perspective and dimensioning requirements and techniques.

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • have vocational competency in producing freehand sketches at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
  • satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacement or equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.
  • Where possible, assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
