Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to produce products using advanced plastic processing equipment.

It relates to operations where the output of the machine or process can be varied at the discretion of the operator and where recognition/rectification skills are applied based upon product/material/process knowledge to achieve specified outcomes.

Where operational maintenance is required to be performed unit MEM07001 Perform operational maintenance of machines/equipment should also be selected.

When production packaging and labelling of the finished goods or product is required unit MEM11006 Perform production packaging should also be selected.

Where the selection and use of power tools/hand held operations is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment requirements

Modification History

Release 1. Supersedes and is equivalent to MEM07026B Perform advanced plastic processing

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists and other workplace documents in performing advanced plastic processing
  • undertaking pre-start checks of a machine or process, including checking of safety equipment and guards
  • undertaking appropriate manual handling in loading, unloading and storing of finished work without damage
  • operating a machine or process and determining required adjustments to process
  • recording production data in accordance with SOPs
  • identifying and rectifying faults/deviations in product, raw materials, tooling and machine/process.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • safety features of the machine or process equipment being operated
  • programmed operational maintenance requirements of the machine or process
  • pre-start checks and start-up/shutdown procedures
  • operating procedures for plastic processing machinery and equipment
  • unloading procedures for plastics processing and procedures for handling and storing finished work
  • consequences of improper handling and storing
  • recording requirements for plastic processing operations
  • emergency procedures
  • plastic product fault/deviations and corrective action to rectify types of product fault/deviations, raw material faults/deviations and tooling faults/deviations
  • deviations and faults in machine or process and the correct action to rectify machine or process faults/deviations.

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • have vocational competency in performing advanced plastic processing at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
  • satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacementor equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires
  • Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
