Release 1.  This is the first release of this unit of competency in the MAR Maritime Training Package.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to maintain mooring equipment.

This includes identifying faulty equipment, working safely, carrying out maintenance and completing necessary documentation.

This unit applies to individuals working in the maritime industry who have responsibility for the operational maintenance of mooring equipment.

Prepare to carry out maintenance 

1.1 

Inspections are conducted and maintenance requirements are identified in accordance with workplace procedures

1.2 

Risk is assessed and hazard control measures are applied to level of responsibility and referred to appropriate person for further action in accordance with workplace procedures

1.3 

Tasks are planned and sequenced in conjunction with others involved in or affected by maintenance work and task prioritisation is determined

1.4 

Relevant tools and equipment required to undertake maintenance are identified and assembled in accordance with workplace procedures

1.5 

Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected and used in accordance with workplace procedures

Carry out maintenance 

2.1 

Maintenance is carried out in accordance with manufacturer instructions, specifications, and workplace procedures

2.2 

Equipment that is unable to be repaired or requires specialised maintenance is reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures

Equipment is checked and tested to determine whether it functions correctly in accordance with workplace procedures

Complete maintenance

Equipment is suitably stored where it is not likely to suffer deterioration or damage

Appropriate personnel are notified of completion of maintenance and details are documented in accordance with workplace procedures

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Range is restricted to essential operating conditions and any other variables essential to the work environment.

This unit replaces and is equivalent to MARB025 Maintain mooring equipment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions on at least one occasion and include:

• applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and work practices
• communicating effectively with others and working as part of a team
• completing documentation related to maintenance of mooring equipment
• following workplace procedures to maintain equipment
• identifying faults and problems related to mooring equipment
• initiating timely action in response to defects or damage
• reading and interpreting manufacturer's instructions and specifications relevant to mooring equipment maintenance
• selecting and using required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions and include knowledge of:

• PPE required when maintaining mooring equipment
• recommended manufacturer instructions for equipment repair
• requirements for completing relevant documentation
• scope of own work, responsibilities, and duties for maintaining mooring equipment including reporting lines and requirement to escalate issues to appropriate personnel
• typical faults that can occur with mooring equipment and related action that should be taken to repair, isolate, replace, report, and record faulty equipment
• WHS/OHS requirements and work practices
• workplace procedures related to maintaining mooring equipment.

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations, where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

• applicable documentation such as workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice, operation manuals, manufacturer instructions and procedures
• tools, equipment, machinery, materials, and relevant personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry.
