Unit descriptor 

This unit covers skills and knowledge required to place flat patterns derived from a hat block, onto millinery material, cut out and make the millinery.

Application of the Unit 

The unit applies to selecting patterns that have been developed from a hat block, following specifications, placing patterns on the materials and fabrications, cutting out and making the millinery.

The unit applies to situations where the cutting and making of the millinery item will be from a set of patterns that have been developed for a one-off item of model millinery. The patterns have been developed by draping or applying a pattern-making medium to a hat block, then designing the pattern pieces directly onto the three-dimensional crown or brim blocks. The patterns will have been developed in the pre-requisite unit LMTML3001A Make flat patterns from hat blocks. The marker may be developed directly on the fabric lay if continuous flat millinery material is to be used; or planned separately and applied to the relevant millinery materials and fabrications.

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team-related activities.

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices which may include:

• quality practices including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising for safe and effective use millinery production technology and operations. This unit also requires an ability to interpret and communicate specifications, check the quality of outcomes and identify and address problems relating to own work, materials, fabrications or equipment.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

1 Prepare millinery tools and equipment and work area

1.1 Prepare work station according to OHS practices 

1.2 Select and collate patterns  and materials or fabrications  according to specifications 

1.3 Select tools and equipment 

1.4 Prepare millinery materials or fabrications and cutting tools and equipment 

2 Spread materials or fabrications and place millinery patterns

2.1 Materials and fabrications are collected and checked for quality, width and pressing and steaming requirements

2.2 Cutting requirements are confirmed with design specification and pattern information

2.3 Materials or fabrications are spread single layer, and adjusted according to pattern requirements

2.4 Materials or fabrications are checked for faults and required action taken to eliminate or isolate faults

2.5 Full patterns are placed  on materials or fabrications according to specifications, ensuring that Left and Right side patterns are according to requirements of an asymmetric design if relevant.

2.6 Pattern shapes are marked  on materials and fabrications according to requirements of the material and job

3 Cut out millinery pattern shapes

3.1 Materials and fabrications are cut using cutting equipment in accordance with requirements for the operation

3.2 Cut work is inspected, any faults identified and appropriate action taken to ensure the cut pieces meet the required quality standards

3.3 OHS practices are followed to prevent accidents and to eliminate risks to personal safety

4 Assemble and join all cut millinery pieces together

4.1 Assembly process is planned

4.2 Work pieces are laid out in sequence

4.3 Machinery  for assembly process is set up and operated in accordance with type of operation, fabric and OHS practices

4.4 Cut pieces are joined together in accordance with work plan and quality standards and procedures

4.5 Action is taken to either reject or correct faults

4.6 Sewn millinery is blocked, moulded, and sized according to specifications

5 Finish millinery

5.1 Millinery is trimmed according to design requirements

5.2 Labels are applied

5.3 Records are completed
