This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install, configure and test a payment gateway that enables translation of electronic payment information provided online into a form accessible to a merchant processor.

It applies to individuals in the network or web development area who are required to build e-commerce facilities into websites.

1. Prepare server and e-business software for payment site

1.4 Choose payment method with reference to business requirements and client expectations

1.5 Test payment software and evaluate to ensure suitability and compatibility with current system and to meet client needs

2. Install payment gateway

2.3 Configure web pages and back-end solutions to handle requests and integrate with the database for each transaction

3. Test payment gateway

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • review client requirements and determine payment software
  • install and configure the payment gateway
  • test and verify transactions and functionality
  • document completed payment gateway.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • identify and describe online commerce systems and processes and their respective advantages/disadvantages, including:
  • batching verification
  • payment software products
  • public key infrastructure (PKI)
  • globally unique ID (GUID)
  • describe the processes and techniques associated with implementing client-side shopping carts through active server pages (ASP) and interfacing with databases with ActiveX Data Objects (ADO)
  • describe the relative advantages and disadvantages of credit card, digital cash and online cheque systems
  • describe the relevance of Copyleft and Free Software Foundation
  • outline electronic commerce modelling language (ECML)
  • summarise encryption options for national and international business
  • identify legislation, regulations and standards that influence online commerce, including:
  • copyright
  • intellectual property
  • privacy.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the network industry, and include access to:

  • appropriate servers and software
  • payment software
  • a simulated merchant account
  • a website.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
