Release 1

This version first released with ICP Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package Version 1.0.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake complex electronic imposition.

It applies to individuals who work in the graphic pre-press sector of the printing and graphic arts industry. The individual takes responsibility for meeting job specifications with a minimum delay in workflow.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Impose images electronically

1.1 Industry designated software is applied to imposition of images according to job specifications

1.2 Imposition options are reviewed to ensure best fit for final substrate size

1.3 Trapping variables are taken into account

1.4 Particularities of press are considered

2 Solve technical problems of imposition

2.1 Technical problems relevant to imposition are considered in imposition scheme

2.2 A lay-down sheet is prepared according to cutting and creasing and folding requirements

2.3 Binding and finishing requirements are considered according to job specifications

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.

Skill

Performance Criteria

Description

Reading

1.1, 2.3

  • Recognises and interprets text to establish job requirements from information contained in specifications

Numeracy

1.1, 1.2, 2.2

  • Interprets and analyses a range of mathematical information used in familiar and routine tasks

Get the work done

1.1-1.4, 2.1, 2.2

  • Takes responsibility for planning and organising own workload and assembles required resources
  • Recognises and takes responsibility for addressing predictable, and some less predictable, problems in familiar work contexts
  • Ensures technical and production issues are taken into account in decision-making
  • Utilises a broad range of features within applications, optimising software functions for specific purposes

Release 1

This version first released with ICP Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package Version 1.0.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • produce TWO complex impositions that best meet job specifications including identification of printing process, substrate surface and size
  • transfer the underlying skill of solving complex technical problems of imposition across the design and pre-press sectors to conform to brief specifications

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • identify using examples of how subsequent printing processes or electronic output affect imposition

Purpose of imposition marks principles of imposition

  • describe the difference between saddle stitch and perfect binding
  • explain the purpose of head margins
  • explain the difference between sheetwise and work and turn

Preparation of data

  • explain trapping requirements that apply to specific jobs
  • list considerations when saving a PostScript file
  • name requirements of an imposition set up document

Use of imposition program

  • describe installation of fold and cut marks
  • explain how creep settings are nominated
  • explain creep and bottling

Output techniques

  • explain the need for a server signature to be available to the output station
  • identify the technique used to verify pictures and fonts are available
  • explain the purpose of a mock-up

Information sources

  • identify manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, their location and the information included in them
  • identify other sources of available information.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
