Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to scan images, including line-art, greyscale and colour originals.

It applies to skilled individuals working as pre-press tradespeople in the printing and graphic arts industry who design and prepare layouts and artwork, manipulate images and text, and apply solutions to a defined range of problems. They may also provide some leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Mount original copy

1.1 Original image is scaled and identified according to job specifications

1.2 Work surfaces are cleaned and prepared to ensure images are dust free

1.3 Original image is mounted according to enterprise procedures

1.4 Work health and safety (WHS) issues are identified and correct practices are used if solvents are applied

2 Set up scanner

2.1 Scanner is set up and calibrated according to specifications

2.2 Data from copy evaluation and aim points to suit original are entered correctly onto scanner according to specifications

2.3 Scanner software or plug-in is selected

3 Produce images

3.1 Medium being scanned is selected according to job specifications

3.2 Disk capacity is checked, where appropriate, to ensure sufficiency for the job

3.3 Processor is set and checked according to job specifications

3.4 Images are scanned as required according to job specifications

3.5 Scanned images are checked against technical specifications of job and adjustments made if necessary

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • correctly use a medium to high-end full colour digital device to reproduce:
  • one line-art
  • one greyscale
  • one colour transparency (positive)
  • one colour reflective
  • one negative
  • one re-screen
  • ensure job specifications and work health and safety (WHS) requirements are met.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • identify scanner settings for various printing processes or electronic media and correctly calibrate scanner
  • name primary colours and colour mixing principles
  • outline variables influencing colour separation requirements
  • describe importance of tone gradation and grey balance
  • discuss need to apply colour correction
  • describe factors influencing selection of screen ruling and dot percentage
  • outline impact output resolution has on final screen ruling
  • outline WHS standards for operating a scanner
  • identify manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to the task, where they are kept, the information included in these documents, and where other sources of information may be found
  • identify WHS standards that relate to working for periods of time on computers.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and materials.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
