Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to adjust and maintain new and existing dental prostheses for dentate and edentulous patients.

This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements define the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Examine oral cavity and prosthesis to determine treatment need

1.1 Review the patient’s medical history

1.2 Decontaminate the removable dental prosthesis according to infection control guidelines

1.3 Assess the patient’s adaptation to the prosthesis

1.4 Determine the procedure that will give desired outcome for the patient and the operator

1.5 Involve the patient or carer in discussions about the procedures, and assist patients to clarify their preferences

1.6 Refer patient to other professionals if necessary

2. Prepare for the procedure

2.1 Provide full details to the patient or carer about options and potential risks and benefits

2.2 Obtain and document consent following ethical and legal requirements

2.3 Select appropriate materials and equipment for the procedure

3. Perform procedure

3.1 Position the patient comfortably for the procedure

3.2 Explain participation required from the patient during the procedure using language that is easily understood

3.3 Carry out procedure in accordance with the treatment plan

3.4 Use equipment for the procedure correctly and in accordance with relevant guidelines

3.5 Prepare materials in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions

3.6 Complete documentation as required

4. Evaluate procedure and instruct patient

4.1 Discuss oral hygiene and maintenance instructions of the removable dental prosthesis with the patient or carer

4.2 Provide clear advice on follow up treatment required to patient or carer

4.3 Reach mutual agreement that all outcomes of the treatment have been fulfilled

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks:

• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment

• prepared 4 patients for adjustment and maintenance of a range of new and existing dental prostheses

• followed procedures to ensure 4 patient’s safety during adjustment and maintenance

• assessed the functional and aesthetic acceptability of at least 4 different completed prostheses.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• conditions of the oral cavity related to ill-fitting removable dentures requiring treatment

• information for patients on available options for treatment of issues arising from ill-fitting removable dentures

• ethical principles and legal responsibilities involved in the provision of dental care

• dental practice or organisation policy and procedures, including registration standards and guidelines.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the dental workplace.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
