Application

This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist the dentist or dental specialist with patient care during medical emergencies in a dental setting.

This unit applies to dental assistants and those carrying out dental assisting work.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for medical emergencies.

1.1. Check expiry of medicaments used during medical emergencies.

1.2. Check first aid supplies and operational status of equipment.

1.3. Locate and have readily available onsite first aid kit.

2. Respond to a medical emergency.

2.1. Recognise indicators that signify a medical emergency.

2.2. Identify and minimise immediate risks to health and safety of self and others.

2.3. Provide assistance as directed by the dental practitioner.

3. Assist with dental medical emergencies.

3.1. Use appropriate procedure as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with low blood pressure.

3.2. Use appropriate procedure as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with a cardiac emergency.

3.3. Use appropriate procedure, medicaments and equipment as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with a diabetic emergency.

3.4. Use appropriate procedure, medicaments and equipment as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with an allergy emergency.

4. Seek assistance from emergency response services.

4.1. Recognise situations requiring a response from emergency services.

4.2. Follow organisational policies and procedures to contact emergency response services.

4.3. Provide emergency response services with accurate medical details regarding the medical emergency.

4.4. Provide required details of the physical location of the patient including address and access requirements.

5. Assist with maintaining patient comfort.

5.1. Assist with ensuring physical comfort of the patient.

5.2. Provide verbal reassurance and support to the patient.

6. Record details of the emergency.

6.1. Document incident details as directed by the dental practitioner according to organisational policies and procedures.

6.2. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

6.3. Follow organisational policies and procedures when required to disclose patient information to others.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • respond to at least one simulated emergency response situation, contextualised to the candidate’s workplace, including:
  • demonstrating correct response for a medical emergency that is identified by the dental practitioner
  • preparing equipment or medicaments for an identified medical emergency
  • applying safe handling techniques
  • providing an accurate verbal or written report of the incident as directed by the practitioner.

Knowledge Evidence

Demonstrated knowledge required to complete the tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:

  • emergency response procedures for the dental team including:
  • responsibilities of each person within the team
  • own role and responsibilities within the emergency response procedure
  • information to assist with medical emergencies in the dental setting including:
  • patient medical history
  • patient emergency contact details
  • general emergency response requirements:
  • DRSABCD
  • common indicators, causes and emergency response required for medical emergencies in the dental setting including:
  • anxiety
  • sensitivity or allergic reaction to latex and other allergens
  • cardiac emergencies including angina and myocardial infarction
  • asthma
  • obstruction of the airway including choking
  • diabetes
  • epilepsy
  • syncope
  • hypoglycaemia
  • hyperglycaemia
  • hyperventilation
  • haemorrhage
  • ocular incidents
  • muscular paralysis
  • stroke
  • chemical burns
  • silver fluoride or diamine
  • phosphoric acid
  • hydrochloric acid
  • maintenance and storage requirements for medicaments and emergency equipment including:
  • storage requirements for schedules of drugs which can be legally stored in dental premises
  • relevance of expiry dates
  • maintenance requirements for automated external defibrillators
  • organisational policies and procedures for disclosing patient information:
  • privacy requirements
  • appropriate disclosure
  • incident forms
  • reports to supervisor
  • other staff
  • emergency contacts or carers
  • insurance or health funds.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must be demonstrated in a dental clinic workplace or in a simulated environment the reflects workplace conditions.

Assessment must ensure:

  • access to suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • simulated or real medicaments required for medical emergency situations including but not limited to epinephrine, glucose and albuterol
  • equipment required for medical emergency situations including automated external defibrillator (AED), operational or training device
  • dental chair
  • access to organisational policies and procedures for responding to medical emergencies
  • modelling of industry operating conditions including access to people for simulations and scenarios in dental assisting work

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations’ requirements for assessors.
