Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to a Medical Imaging Professional. Work includes conducting activities essential for the functioning of a medical imaging environment, including, specialist cleaning, stock maintenance and set-up requirements.

This unit does not equip a worker to perform medical imaging and applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of a Medical Imaging Professional.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Receive delegation and gather information.

1.1. Obtain written or verbal delegation for an allied health activity from the Medical Imaging Professional.

1.2. Obtain information from relevant sources and delegating Medical Imaging Professional, according to organisational policy and procedures.

1.3. Discuss and confirm with delegating Medical Imaging Professional consultations, preparation of equipment resource and work health and safety (WHS) requirements.

2. Contribute to set-up for medical imaging.

2.1. Prepare and tidy examination room.

2.2. Check equipment to manufacturer requirements for wear and damage and report according to organisational protocol.

2.3. Turn on equipment.

2.4. Check batteries charge and inserted into imaging detector plates according to manufacturer requirements.

2.5. Refill medical imaging paper printer and film printer.

2.6. Check Radiology Information System (RIS).

2.7. Safely transport mobile X-ray and ultrasound equipment.

3. Clean medical imaging equipment and environment within scope of role.

3.1. Clean medical imaging equipment according to manufacturer requirements as delegated by the Medical Imaging Professional.

3.2. Clean and document examination rooms in accordance with infection control requirements and organisational procedures.

3.3. Maintain a tidy and clean medical imaging environment.

3.4. Dispose of cleaning materials and other waste in accordance with manufacturer requirements and organisational guidelines.

4. Maintain medical imaging stock.

4.1. Maintain levels of disposable stock according to organisational procedures.

4.2. Monitor medical imaging supplies and order where necessary.

4.3. Maintain stocks of clean linen.

4.4. Monitor oxygen cylinders and order as to organisational procedures.

5. Provide support for the imaging process.

5.1. Assist with person's transfers and movement using relevant lifting procedures and infection control requirements to ensure self and person's safety as delegated by the Medical Imaging Professional.

5.2. Confirm with person pre-existing conditions that may be affected by X-ray or procedure and report concerns to the delegated by the Medical Imaging Professional.

5.3. Assist person with needs during the medical imaging process as delegated by the Medical Imaging Professional.

5.4. Ensure own actions do not compromise any sterile field.

6. Work safely in a medical radiation environment.

6.1. Ensure individuals and support persons are aware of dangers associated with magnetic fields and X-rays.

6.2. Comply with safety signs, radiation protection principles and organisation’s radiation management plan in the medical imaging environment.

6.3. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and personal monitoring in the medical imaging environment.

6.4. Report and document any concerns about radiation safety according to organisation procedures.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • support the functioning of a medical imaging environment by conducting set up, equipment cleaning and stock control on one occasion
  • assist with moving and positioning of two people during a procedure or x-ray under the direction of the Medical Imaging Professional - one in simulation and one in the workplace.

Assessment Conditions

Skills may be demonstrated in the workplace, or in a simulated environment, as outlined in the performance evidence.

Assessment must ensure:

  • access to suitable facilities, equipment and resources that reflect real working conditions and model industry operating conditions and contingencies
  • access to manufacturer instructions
  • access to organisational policies and procedures
  • access to medical imaging equipment and guidelines
  • access to radiation management plan
  • access to personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • opportunities for engagement with real people accessing allied health services.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations requirements for assessors, and:

  • be a Certificate IV qualified Allied Health Assistant with a minimum of three years of professional experience in allied health services; or
  • a registered Medical Imaging Professional.
