Qualification Description

This qualification is specific to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working to provide a range of primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients. The Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice defines the knowledge and skills for workers involved in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and who work autonomously under the broad guidance of others. The Diploma qualification covers workers who have a basis of skills and knowledge in primary health care practice, which they may apply in clinical, management or education functions.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Packaging Rules

31 units of competency are required to achieve this qualification, including:

  • 21 core units and
  • 10 elective units, of which:
  • at least 5 units must come from the general elective units list below
  • up to 5 units may be selected from any endorsed Training Packages or accredited courses relevant to the work outcome
  • no more than 3 units in total may be selected from the Business Services Training Package.

All electives chosen must support the overall integrity of the AQF level of this qualification and contribute to valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

To achieve a specialisation in maternal and infant care – all Group A electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice (Maternal and infant care).
