Description
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required by workers who undertake the design, construction and modification of specialised seating and associated equipment for people with disabilities based on multi-disciplinary assessment.
Rehabilitative and assistive technologists may work in hospitals, health centres or non-government organisations.
Their role includes:
- Assessment of technical aspects of client needs under the supervision of an relevant health professional
- Technical specification, design and construction or modification of assistive equipment to meet client needs;
- Development of designs for original equipment if not commercially available;
- Maintenance of the workshop
- Inventory management
This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways.

The following requirements apply for entry to this qualification:
- Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication or equivalent or
- Attainment of the following units of competency:

The following unit or a unit with equivalent competency outcomes is required to work in rehabilitation and assistive technology.
HLTHIR301C Communicate and work effectively in health
Group B - rehabilitation and assistive technology electives - at least 2 units must be selected
At least two electives must be selected from the following rehabilitation and assistive technology units
HLTART404B Install and maintain augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
HLTART405C Install and maintain environmental control systems
HLTART406C Modify and maintain wheelchairs
HLTART407B Test and evaluate compliance of assistive technology equipment

The importance of culturally aware and respectful practice
All workers undertaking work in health need foundation knowledge to inform their work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and co-workers and with clients and co-workers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This foundation must be provided and assessed as part of a holistic approach to delivery and assessment of this qualification. Specific guidelines for assessment of this aspect of competency are provided in the Assessment Guidelines for the Health Training Package.

Where work involves a specific focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or culturally diverse clients or communities, one or both of the following electives is recommended:
