This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan production of panels including forming boards, laminating boards and applying laminates or veneers to board. It also includes coordinating and monitoring the panel production process and output.
The unit applies to production supervisors who plan and coordinate panel production in a forest and wood products factory setting.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

1. Plan panel production.
|
1.1 Review panel production schedule and confirm requirements with relevant personnel.
1.2 Identify and follow safe work procedure for planning and coordinating panel production.
1.3 Identify hazards and control risk in the work area, relevant to own role and responsibility.
1.4 Inspect panel characteristics and record and report variations to operators.
1.5 Plan, schedule and communicate panel type, sizes and production methods to operators.
1.6 Maintain communication with operators as required, to ensure safety and production requirements are met.

2. Monitor panel production outcomes and record information.
|
2.1 Monitor panel production for effective forming, laminating or veneering outcomes and panel condition.
2.2 Assist operators to evaluate panels, identify faults and rectify production problems.
2.3 Develop processes for rejecting and disposing of sub-standard panels produced in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.
2.4 Monitor panel production and output management and record possible process improvements.

3. Coordinate panel production and record information.
|
3.1 Modify production methods or schedules as required, to ensure optimum performance.
3.2 Communicate to operators and record production improvement modifications in line with site procedures.
3.3 Direct produced panels to storage or transfer for further processing.
3.4 Record and report panel production data, output data, quality data and equipment faults in line with record keeping procedure and site requirements.

Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP4201B Plan and coordinate panel production, which was first released with FPI05 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.
Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
- safely and efficiently plan and coordinate panel production in line with safe work procedure and workplace requirements
- monitor panel production outcomes and identify and rectify production and equipment problems and faults
- record and report workplace information: production, output, quality, faults
- modify production methods and schedules for panel production
- communicate effectively and coordinate personnel to follow planning, communications and scheduling for panel production.
Knowledge Evidence
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- safe work procedures, site procedures, policies and site standards relevant to planning and coordinating panel production
- environmental protection requirements, including the safe disposal of waste material
- hazards and risks associated with the panel production process and risk control strategies
- panel production procedures
- panel types: laminated, veneered, plywood, chipboard, fibreboard, medium density fibreboard
- panel characteristics: panel type, size, surface treatment, thickness, grade
- production methods: board forming, pressing board using daylight process, board laminating, pressing laminated ply, applying laminates or veneers
- established communication channels and protocols used to communicate with relevant operators
- problem identification and resolution strategies and common fault finding techniques
- procedures for recording and reporting production, quality and fault information.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
- panel production schedule
- safe work procedure for planning and coordinating panel production
- personal protective equipment required for planning and coordinating panel production
- panels
- production process equipment
- relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
- manual or computer-based information recording systems for recording production, quality and fault information.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
- hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
- be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
- be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
