Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan the production of timber from flitches and cants in a timber processing facility. Work involves responsibilities in planning cutting patterns and schedules, coordinating sawing processes and monitoring equipment and output for improvement.

The unit applies to individuals who work as supervisors and production supervisors in timber processing facilities. They generally demonstrate autonomy, judgement and limited responsibility in known or changing contexts and within established parameters.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan timber production from flitches and cants

1.1 Review workplace health and safety requirements, environmental protection practices and emergency procedures according to operational requirements

1.2 Identify and control hazards and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements and health and safety legislation to maintain safe work practices

1.3 Assess flitches and cants for types of timber that can be cut and determine the optimal cutting pattern

1.4 Plan and document cutting patterns to maximise output and minimise wastage

1.5 Develop timber cutting schedules and work orders and brief sawing operators according to workplace procedures

1.6 Identify variations in timber characteristics and report to sawing operators

2. Coordinate sawing operations for timber production

2.1 Assist sawing operators to evaluate flitches and cants and sawing problems

2.2 Monitor and assess timber cutting processes for the quality of cutting pattern, suitability to flitch or cant condition and ability to maintain production schedule

2.3 Modify cutting patterns and production schedule as required to ensure optimum performance, and communicate to sawing operators

2.4 Assist sawing operators to reject sub-standard flitches and cants and ensure they are disposed of according to environmental protection practices

2.5 Ensure processed timber is directed to a designated area for storage or further processing

2.6 Complete and maintain records of cutting output according to workplace procedures

2.7 Investigate, record and report major processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel

3. Evaluate and determine process improvement

3.1 Monitor and evaluate timber conversion operations and output to determine process improvements

3.2 Document process improvements and communicate to appropriate personnel according to workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential for performance in this unit of competency but are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Skill

Description

Numeracy

  • Complete routine calculations to measure flitches and cants
  • Complete complex calculations to determine:
  • potential volume return from flitches and cants
  • cutting schedules considering human and equipment resource capacity

Navigate the world of work

  • Understand main tasks, responsibilities and boundaries of own role
  • Take responsibility for coordinating a team of sawing operators for effective timber production operations

Interact with others

  • Use modes of communication suitable for the purpose to facilitate process improvements

Get the work done

  • Use a computer, keyboard and software to prepare cutting schedules, work orders and reports

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria of this unit. There must be evidence that, on at least one occasion, the individual has:

  • followed workplace health and safety requirements and environmental procedures for planning and monitoring timber production from flitches and cants
  • planned and monitored timber production from flitches and cants
  • modified cutting patterns and schedules for timber sawing operations
  • coordinated personnel to follow planning, communications and scheduling of timber sawing operations for timber production.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • health and safety hazards or risks related to sawing operations for timber production as identified through risk assessments, manufacturer technical information, regulations and industry health and safety guides
  • workplace procedures specific to planning and monitoring sawing operations for timber production:
  • health and safety, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • communication reporting lines for sawyer team members and self
