Elements and Performance Criteria

Element

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for filing and saw setting

1.1 Review work order and, where required, check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

1.3 Plan setting process in line with work order.

1.4 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all maintenance and repair processes.

2. Set saw

2.1 Set up saw in selected jig to enable setting work.

2.2 Check kerf and finish requirements to suit machine horsepower, saw type and cutting conditions.

2.3 Examine individual teeth to check amount of setting required.

2.4 Maintain welding condition, saw temper and consistency of set between alternate teeth.

2.5 Measure and assess teeth for correct setting.

2.6 Bevel teeth and assess bevel length.

2.7 Apply set to teeth and allow for estimated spring back.

2.8 Check set to teeth using gauges in line with organisational procedures.

2.9 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • complete precise calculations to file and set saws to correct angle
  • estimate springback.

Oral communication skills to:

  • ask open and closed probe questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

  • interpret:
  • workplace health and safety procedures
  • work orders
  • manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.

Writing skills to:

  • complete basic accurate records of processing and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

  • efficiently and logically sequence stages of preparation and repair work using work order to guide activities.

Problem-solving skills to:

  • assess condition of saw teeth and complete necessary adjustments to set
  • recognise faulty equipment and resolve by reporting or rectifying.

Technology skills to:

  • select and use appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment for filing and setting saws
  • efficiently and safely file and set saws.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to filing and setting saws
  • bevelling teeth and assessing bevel lengths, widths, angles and surface texture, in line with standard operating procedures and site production requirements
  • removing and replacing saws from equipment
  • setting teeth and assessing conditions in line with standard operating procedures
  • complete these assessments on saw blade condition:
  • cracks and movement in existing welding repairs
  • altered temper and hardness of blade from excessive heat during cutting
  • weaknesses or damage caused through stress of bending teeth.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • purpose, features and operation of saws for which blades are filed and set:
  • hand saws
  • band saws
  • circular saws
  • gang saws
  • features and names of different parts of saw blades
  • purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used to file and set saw blades:
  • jigs
  • vices
  • setting instruments; levers and gauges
  • automatic or hand-held grinders
  • bevel files
  • importance of setting teeth to match requirements for:
  • characteristics of various materials sawn
  • speed of the sawing process
  • direction of the sawing process
  • cutting angle for sawing
  • saw blade specifications
  • methods for:
  • removing saw blades from saws
  • assessing saw blade condition
  • setting teeth to a specified profile
  • grinding and bevelling teeth to required shape, tolerance and pitch
  • compensating for the effects of spring back
  • tooth pitch and tooth angles at which blades are bevelled (blade geometry)
  • characteristics of metal used in saw blades; causes and consequences of spring back
  • organisational policies and procedures specific to filing and setting saw blades:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment
