This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan and monitor the nutrition of a stand of trees.
The unit applies to those in management roles in the forest and wood products industry including Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Manager, Propagation and Stand Health Supervisor.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan stand nutrition
|
1.1 Identify site environmental requirements.
1.2 Obtain and analyse relevant information for impacts on stand nutrition planning.
1.3 Select methods of ensuring adequate and appropriate level of stand nutrition.
1.4 Develop and document performance indicators and targets.
1.5 Obtain required approvals from relevant authorities.
1.6 Communicate stand nutrition plan and its performance indicators are communicated to appropriate personnel.

2. Implement and monitor stand nutrition plan
|
2.1 Communicate with operational staff to explain nutrition plan, activities and roles and responsibilities.
2.2 Coordinate resources and maintain documentation for fertiliser applications.
2.3 Monitor the implementation of the nutrition plan and make necessary adjustments.
2.4 Ensure compliance with organisational procedures, quality, WHS, legislative and regulatory requirements.
2.5 Identify and control potential and existing risks and hazards in the work area.

3. Review outcomes of nutrition activities
|
3.1 Collect data on stand nutrition and review effectiveness of activities.
3.2 Analyse budgets and cost-effectiveness of nutrition program.
3.3 Document outcomes of the nutrition plan against established performance indicators and report to relevant personnel.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
- follow organisational policies and procedures for managing stand nutrition
- develop and implement a plan for stand nutrition that includes:
- relevant policies and procedures
- budgets
- timelines
- resources (people, materials, equipment)
- activities and tasks
- performance indicators
- identify nutritional deficiencies in target species
- recommend suitable strategies to address nutritional deficiencies in target species
- report on the outcomes of a plan for stand nutrition
Knowledge Evidence
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- environmental protection requirements relating to stand nutrition
- hazards relating to stand nutrition including:
- the use of chemicals and/or biological agents
- infrastructure in the vicinity of the stand, including powerlines
- organisational policies and procedures for stand nutrition
- fertiliser technology and options for the application of fertiliser
- nutritional requirements of target species
- biology of target species
- hydrology and hydrological principles
- plant identification and classification skills
- ecology and ecological interactions
- soil types and structure
- types of tools and equipment used for ensuring stand nutrition, and procedures for their use, operation and maintenance.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
- relevant organisational procedures, policies and requirements to co-ordinate stand nutrition
- relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
- documents, spreadsheets and commonly used proforma documents
- forest area to implement stand nutrition
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
- hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
- be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
- be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
