This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to maintain sites and facilities used by the public. The unit includes identifying and reporting site hazards and safely handling waste materials.
The unit applies to the maintenance of visitor sites in forest environment settings.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for site maintenance
|
1.1 Identify maintenance requirements from work order and supervisor instructions in line with organisational requirements

1.3 Select, transport and store equipment in line with organisational requirements
1.4 Identify and assess potential and existing site hazards in line with WHS and environmental requirements, and organisational procedures
1.5 Establish and maintain communication with colleagues and others in line with WHS requirements.

2.1 Inspect visitor site to determine maintenance and cleaning requirements in line with organisational procedures and environmental requirements
2.2 Maintain visitor site in line with organisational and environmental requirements
2.3 Handle and remove waste materials according to environmental, WHS and workplace requirements
2.4 Identify, note and report problems in line with organisational procedures
Record and report visitor site maintenance to appropriate personnel.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
- maintain visitor sites by:
- lawn mowing and edging
- raking leaves
- cleaning toilets, shower blocks and other structures
- supplying firewood
- repainting and other minor repairs
- removing rubbish
- follow regulatory and workplace requirements and codes of practice relevant to maintaining visitor sites
- check and order supplies of consumables for cleaning relevant to maintaining visitor sites including:
- toilet paper
- cleaning chemicals
- lawn mower fuel
- paint
- select and use types of cleaning and maintenance equipment including:
- manual cleaning tools
- power tools
- petrol-driven lawn mowers
- whipper snipper and edger
- undertake efficient and safe selection, use, transport and storage of equipment and supplies with no damage to equipment, property, environment, colleagues or the public
- identify site hazards or unsafe facilities including:
- contaminated waste material
- visitors moving around adjacent to maintenance activities
- unsafe structures
- deteriorated structures
- natural features or facilities
and demonstrate an appropriate response, including reporting to supervisor
- handle and remove waste or contaminated material including:
- blood
- bandages
- sanitary bins
- effluent
- garbage
- sharps
- identify, note and report problems including:
- deteriorated or vandalised structures
- record and report manually, in a computer based system or other appropriate organisational communication system:
- problems including deteriorated or vandalised structures and natural features and facilities that do not meet enterprise acceptable standards
- maintenance outcomes
- hazards and incidents
- equipment malfunctions and damage
Knowledge Evidence
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- environmental protection requirements, including:
- waste minimisation
- the safe disposal of waste material
- implementing recycling and reuse guidelines
- the safe use and storage of chemicals
- the minimisation of environmental impact
- cleaning of plant, tools and equipment
- work place and site standards, requirements, policies and procedures for maintaining visitor sites including:
- camp grounds
- toilet and shower blocks
- natural features
- identification and handling procedures relevant to environmental risks and hazards, including:
- contaminated waste material
- visitors moving around adjacent to maintenance activities
- unsafe structures
- deteriorated structures
- natural features or facilities
- types of cleaning and maintenance equipment and procedures for their safe use, including:
- manual cleaning tools
- power tools
- petrol-driven lawn mowers
- whipper snipper and edger
- types of maintenance supplies and consumables, including:
- toilet paper
- cleaning chemicals
- lawn mower fuel
- paint
- procedures for the safe use and maintenance of cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment, including:
- selection of appropriate cleaning and maintenance equipment
- checking and ordering supplies of consumable items
- transporting and storing equipment
- operation of septic tanks and other plumbing associated with visitor use facilities
- established communication channels and protocols
- procedures and practices for recording and reporting workplace information on a manual or computer based system or other appropriate communication system.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
- workplace location or simulated workplace,including camp grounds, toilet and shower blocks and natural features
- materials and equipment relevant to undertaking work applicable to this unit, including manual cleaning tools, power tools, petrol-driven lawn mowers,whipper snipper and edger
- specifications and work instructions
- relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
- hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
- be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
- be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence
