Replaces equivalent unit FPICOT2213B Grade softwood sawn and milled products, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 1.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to visually evaluate softwood sawn and milled product characteristics for classification into various appearance grades. It includes sorting softwood into classifications and marking material in line with grade type.

The unit applies to those who grade softwood sawn and milled products in a wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for grading

1.1 Review work order to grade softwood sawn and milled products and clarify with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Obtain type and quantity of sawn and milled products to be graded from storage location.

1.3 Select equipment appropriate to work order and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer recommendations.

1.4 Plan grading process in line with site procedures.

1.5 Establish and maintain communication with others at site to ensure safety.

2. Grade products

2.1 Visually assess size of sawn and milled products in line with industry standards and number of ranges estimated.

2.2 Evaluate material characteristics of each product are evaluated against industry standards for grade type.

2.3 Measure moisture content and evaluate against standards and seasoning requirements.

2.4 Mark characteristics for docking.

2.5 Sort material in line with its grade classification and clearly mark with markers or stickers.

2.6 Reject and dispose of sub-standard material in line with site requirements.

2.7 Record and report grading outcomes and distribution problems to appropriate personnel.

  • measure moisture content using a moisture meter
  • calibrate measuring equipment.

Replaces equivalent unit FPICOT2213B Grade softwood sawn and milled products, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency.  These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including ‘Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • prepare for and grade a full range of softwood sawn and milled products in readiness for storage or processing
  • follow work order for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • work safely and communicate effectively with others at work site
  • identify characteristics and defects in softwood sawn and milled products and mark for sorting
  • follow organisational policies and procedures, standards and codes of practice for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • record and report grading activity.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • applicable regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • organisational and site standards, policies and procedures for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • environmental risks and hazards associated with grading timber
  • criteria for recycling and re-using sub-standard material
  • methods of visual estimation, grading, colour identification and tagging
  • sorting, marking and distribution processes
  • industry standard cross sections and lengths
  • storage systems, locations and labelling procedures
  • established communication channels and protocols
  • problem identification and resolution strategies, and common fault finding techniques
  • typical tools and equipment used for grading timber, along with their safe operation and maintenance
  • procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • softwood sawn and milled products for grading
  • measuring equipment moisture meters
  • personal protective equipment suitable for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • lifting equipment for the movement of sawn and milled products
  • work order, workplace requirements and site standards for grading softwood sawn and milled products
  • relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements 

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
