Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for cutting or machining process

1.1 Review work order and identify required finished board sizes and quantities in line with operator.

1.2 Prepare to work safely according to workplace work health and safety (WHS) requirements.

1.3 Check sequence of cuts or machining passes with operator and work order, where multiple cuts are required.

2. Maintain process flow.

2.1 Control flitch, cant or board to maintain process flow in line with sawing or dressing speed, WHS requirements and production standards.

2.2 Control and regularly clear sawn waste and material in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.

2.3 Assess flitch, cant or board for further processing requirements and return to operator in line with production standards.

2.4 Identify and report problems in flow or processing of materials to operator for resolution.

2.5 Dispose of faulty or defective material in line with site procedures and environmental requirements, as directed by operator.

3. Sort finished product and follow record-keeping procedures.

3.1 Sort and stack boards in line with site procedures and specific operational requirements.

3.2 Assess boards for standard sizes in line with site procedures.

3.3 Segregate and store or direct recoverable material and waste for further processing in line with site procedures.

3.4 Record and report production and quality information in line with site procedures and organisational requirements.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • estimate and evaluate size of tail out materials
  • sort finished material into required grades by visually estimating them or using a measuring tool.

Oral communication skills to:

  • communicate effectively with relevant personnel to ensure safety and production requirements are met
  • ask questions to clarify and confirm information.

Writing skills to:

  • complete production records, quality records, tally sheets and maintenance records.

Reading skills to:

  • read charts for stress grading and standard timber profiles and cross sections
  • read workplace safety and operating procedures related to tailing material.

Planning and organising skills to:

  • follow manual handling procedures
  • implement waste minimisation and disposal, recycling and re-use guidelines.

Initiative skills to:

  • apply fatigue management strategies.

Technology skills to:

  • use plant, tools and equipment.

Replaces equivalent unit FPICOT2205B Tail out materials, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to tailing out materials
  • tail out material while maintaining process flow according to safe work procedure
  • identify and respond to processing faults according to workplace requirements and organisational policy
  • sort finished material according to safe work procedure
  • dispose of waste material according to environmental protection requirements
  • follow record keeping procedures for recording quality and production requirements.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • safe work procedures for tailing out materials:
  • standard operating procedure (SOP)
  • personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • procedures for safely disposing of waste material in an environmentally sustainable manner
  • methods of controlling materials including:
  • material movement
  • position of the material being sawn or dressed
  • avoiding contact with tail of saw or cutter
  • removing waste
  • common work area and environmental hazards and risks and how to control them
  • tailing out processes and procedures
  • common industry terminology
  • criteria for recycling and re-using material with faults or defects
  • industry standard cross-section and length dimensions and tolerances
  • established communication channels and protocols used to ensure safety and productivity
  • flow or control problems including
  • speed of production
  • flow of product
  • sharpness of blades or cutters
  • quality of materials
  • communication
  • housekeeping
  • burn marks
  • rough finish
  • tear out
  • machine marks
  • irregular size of finished product
  • types of tools and equipment, and procedures for their safe use, operation and maintenance
  • mathematical procedures used to calculate timber size and dimension
  • procedures for recording and reporting quality and production requirements.

Assessment Conditions

  • specifications and work instructions

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
