This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct chlorine dosing of water at the point of supply as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

It includes preparing, conducting and monitoring chlorine dosing and performance at the point of supply to ensure chlorine disinfection residue levels meet the minimum standard for Australian drinking water guidelines (ADWG).

This unit applies to personnel working in ADF preventive medicine.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Persons undertaking this unit work under supervision and perform specific tasks in familiar contexts.

Use, handle and store chlorine in accordance with safety data sheet and organisational procedures

This unit replaces and is equivalent to DEFPH007A Conduct chlorine dosing of water at the point of supply.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions – in an urban or field setting – and include:

• applying Australian drinking water guidelines (ADWG)
• applying relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures
• calculating chlorine dosing levels accurately
• identifying and responding to dosing faults
• identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing control measures
• interpreting data gathered in the field against quality standards
• liaising and communicating with persons in positions of authority
• measuring chemicals accurately
• using, handling and storing chlorine in accordance with safety data sheets (SDS)/material safety data sheet (MSDS).

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

• ADWG
• chlorine dosing levels per volume of water
• documentation processes relevant to own workplace
• process of disease
• relationship between chlorine, water pH and temperature as it relates to water disinfection
• relevant dangerous/hazardous goods codes including:

• handling and storage requirements for chlorine

• relevant SDS/MSDS
• risk management principles
• water quality assurance measures.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations, where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

• a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulations
• relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment, stores and personal protective equipment currently used in industry
• relevant documentation including operational procedures, safety data sheets, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
