Unit Descriptor

This unit covers the competency required to immediately supervise a military team involved in a military explosive ordnance task.

Application of the Unit

This competency normally applies to the individual who is required to immediately supervise a military team involved in a military explosive ordnance task.

The individual is required to plan the explosive ordnance task, apply the appropriate work health and safety requirements (WHS) and safety precautions, identify requirements and resources, and supervise the performance of the task.

Military explosive ordnance tasks  are normally conducted on operations, they can however be conducted in peacekeeping, in support of the civilian community/ authority and also in training.

1. Identify task requirement and allocated resources 

1.1 Task, resources allocated  for the performance, constraints imposed and any special requirements for the conduct are determined

1.2 Doctrine , policies and procedures , including issues of concern and shortfall applying to the task are identified

1.3 Identified problems are reported to the chain of command  in accordance with procedures and instructions

2. Plan and prepare for explosive ordnance task 

2.1 Method of performing the task is planned addressing the guidance and the resources allocated, including contingency arrangements

2.2 Reconnaissance of the task site is conducted

2.3 Liaison and coordination is effected with concurrent/neighbouring/support activities/units

2.4 Materials required are identified and accessed

2.5 Materials are assessed for suitability against requirement, with defects/shortfalls being reported in accordance with procedures

2.6 WHS  policies/safety precautions addressing the task are identified and applied for its duration in all associated activities

2.7 Personnel to be employed in process are informed and briefed on the task

2.8 Rehearsals and/or trial runs are conducted where practical

3. Supervise explosive ordnance task 

3.1 Task is supervised and monitored to ensure observance of appropriate operational and WHS requirements/safety precautions, efficiency in performance and mission are achieved

3.2 Activities involved in the task are coordinated with concurrent/neighbouring/support activities/units

3.3 Problems are reported to chain of command in accordance with procedures and instructions

4. Conclude explosive ordnance task 

4.1 Task area, tools, materials and equipment are refurbished in accordance with current instructions and procedures

4.2 Debriefing is conducted as appropriate with higher headquarters/staff and the personnel involved in the task

4.3 Task is documented in accordance with current instructions and procedures

Method of assessment 

This unit may be assessed with the following unit:

  • DEFEO101D Work safely with explosive ordnance.

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

  • direct observation
  • interviewing the candidate
  • journals and workplace documentation
  • third party reports from supervisors
  • written or oral questions

Military explosive ordnance  tasks:

  • Are those activities undertaken by the Australian Defence Force, which involve the use of explosive ordnance in support of:
