Unit Descriptor

This unit covers the competency required to operate a service hand grenade, which may include drill, high explosive, and practice grenades.

Operating a service hand grenade involves the ability to safely handle, safely maintain, safely throw the grenade and obtain a satisfactory throwing accuracy in accordance with organisational standards. The assessment is to include the handling and throwing of live HE grenades and to achieve blast effect on the targets.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application of the Unit

This unit of competency would typically apply to a member of the Australian Defence Force.

The individual will operate independently or as part of a team and will normally operate under orders and in accordance with the Rules of Engagement.

All aspects of this units must be carried out in accordance with legislation, standards, and organisational polices and procedures.

1.1 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation.

1.2 Service  hand grenade  is identified  and selected in accordance with supervisor’s instructions and operational requirements.

1.3 Service hand grenade is safely handled and carried.

1.4 Service hand grenade is secured.

2. Safely maintain a service hand grenade 

2.1 Service hand grenade and associated equipment are cleaned and serviced as required.

2.2 Defects  are identified and rectified within limits of authority or reported to supervisor.

2.3 Documentation is completed.

3. Safely operate a service hand grenade 

3.1 Grenade drills  are conducted.

3.2 Throwing position  is adopted as required.

3.3 Throwing principles are applied.

3.4 Grenade equipment is employed as required.

3.5 Service hand grenade is safely thrown.

3.6 Range Safety Brief and Practice Brief are complied with when throwing a service hand grenade on a range.
