Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop expertise in singing styles associated with American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoire.

The unit applies to those who as performers draw on a variety of singing styles and techniques within musical theatre. The process includes supervision during practice sessions, but individuals are also expected to work independently on experimenting with ways to convey storylines and characters, integrating vocal and movement skills typical of specific musical theatre genres.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Develop warm-up and cool-down techniques

1.1 Analyse aspects of the human voice required for musical theatre performances in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Analyse physical problems that can limit movement and physical expression, or cause injury

1.3 Discuss with required personnel prevention strategies for avoiding physical and vocal problems

1.4 Perform vocal and physical warm-up and cool-down procedures in preparation for performance activities

2. Develop expertise in selected musical theatre repertoire

2.1 Listen to and discuss singing techniques associated with major musical theatre genres

2.2 Develop register and dynamics to sing in a Broadway belting style

2.3 Practice expressing different emotions associated with song storylines by mixing head and chest register when singing

2.4 Identify and develop singing techniques associated with songs from British, American and Australian musical theatre repertoire

2.5 Practice adding depth to the interpretation of songs within musical theatre genres using body movements, gesture and facial expressions

2.6 Practise songs from American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoire in preparation for auditions

3. Review and further expertise

3.1 Develop personal practice plan for singing techniques required for musical theatre

3.2 Identify sources that can be used to build knowledge of musical theatre terminology and trends

3.3 Identify and develop ways to improve own singing skills using feedback form required personnel

3.4 Attend performances by industry practitioners and identify new ideas, techniques and trends that can be applied to own musical theatre practice

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • develop singing techniques for and perform, over at least three different occasions, songs from each of the following musical theatre repertoire:
  • American
  • British
  • Australian.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • perform vocal warm-ups and warm-downs
  • adapt singing techniques to perform different musical theatre repertoire
  • improve own singing techniques in response to constructive feedback.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • features of different musical theatre styles, with particular reference to Australian, British and American repertoire
  • accepted industry practices for safe vocal use
  • principles underlying characterisation in musicals from a range of genres
  • principles underlying vocal techniques in a musical theatre performance context
  • adjustments required for vocal techniques to produce singing styles associated with different musical theatre genres.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • venues and spaces with acoustics and equipment required for musical theatre rehearsal
  • American, British and Australian musical theatre repertoire.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
