Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use microphones and other audio input sources for productions in the music, screen, media, entertainment and events industries.

The unit applies to those who are responsible for managing audio input sources and who work to help achieve quality audio outcomes for recordings, performances and shows. They work autonomously in a team environment and may also have limited responsibility for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Unit Sector

Media and entertainment production – Audio/sound

Elements and Performance Criteria

E LEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for production

1.1 Determine audio requirements and timeframes using production documentation and in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Assess venue and determine input source options based on acoustic analysis and accounting for any physical limitations

1.3 Identify microphone placement according to production requirements and accounting for acoustic sources of audio

1.4 Clarify backline needs of performers and organise microphones and other input sources as required

1.5 Confirm final placement and organisation of microphones and other audio input sources prior to technical run-through or rehearsals

1.6 Undertake required audio input checks and complete audio documentation according to organisational procedures

2. Set optimum levels for audio inputs

2.1 Connect microphones in desired locations according to safe work practices

2.2 Set optimum levels for all microphones and audio inputs

2.3 Increase gain before feedback using equalisation and effects equipment

3. Manage inputs

3.1 Prepare and review input signal failure plan

3.2 Test input sources, identify problems and take action to rectify as required

3.3 Evaluate quality of audio set-up and note areas for future improvement in consultation with required personnel

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • manage microphones and other audio inputs during technical run-throughs or rehearsals on at least two occasions
  • set up and test complex microphone plots and other audio input sources for at least two different recordings, productions or events, according to requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • demonstrate ability to use microphones
  • describe features of and process for setting up microphones and audio equipment
  • work collaboratively with others in the audio production process.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • features of different microphones and contexts in which they are best used
  • procedures for using equalisation and signal processing devices
  • acoustic consequences of signal phase problems and when to use phantom power
  • industry trends in microphone development and availability of products
  • strategies to evaluate quality of audio set-up for improvement
  • issues and challenges that typically arise when setting up and managing audio input sources and strategies for addressing them
  • collaboration in a production environment
  • organisational procedures for completing audio production documentation
  • developments in audio technology and how audio technology is used in work contexts
  • safe work practices relating to setting up and managing audio equipment
  • issues to consider when preparing microphone plots and input signal failure plans.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
