Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to mix sound in a broadcasting environment, including operating studio equipment, identifying issues with equipment and broadcast, and mixing audio inputs on air.

The unit applies to those who help to confirm that all audio inputs are mixed smoothly in line with program requirements for live to air broadcasts. They work closely with presenters and guests, providing them with cues prior to opening microphones.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for broadcast

1.1 Confirm production requirements and program schedule with required personnel

1.2 Set up and check studio equipment is safe and operational, and report any issues according to broadcast studio procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements

1.3 Confirm that any pre-recorded material is ready for broadcast

1.4 Confirm that external sources required by program are available from point of origin to studio panel desk

1.5 Check that arrangements for recording and linking live sources meet production requirements

1.6 Conduct sound check and adjust as required in line with broadcast studio procedures, health and safety, and production requirements

1.7 Identify and rectify simple problems, and refer issues beyond own responsibilities to required personnel

2. Mix audio inputs on air

2.1 Mix audio inputs through studio panel and produce required sound level and tonal balances

2.2 Execute sound cues according to production requirements

2.3 Cue and play presentation material according to program schedule

2.4 Cue studio guests as required and open microphones

2.5 Resolve operational problems with equipment as they arise throughout on-air sessions

3. Complete operations after broadcast

3.1 Save required material in line with broadcast studio procedures

3.2 Confirm surplus material is handled in line with broadcast studio procedures

3.3 Complete documentation in line with broadcast studio procedures

3.4 Check and clean equipment and work environment in line with broadcast studio procedures

3.5 Identify technical faults and problems with broadcast, and notify required personnel as required in line with broadcast studio procedures

3.6 Seek feedback from required personnel on own performance as a panel operator and note areas for improvement

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • set up and operate a studio panel using a full range of audio inputs on at least three occasions according to broadcast studio procedures, health and safety, and production requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • collaborate with others in a broadcast production environment and follow instructions from required personnel
  • archive materials, complete documentation and check equipment at conclusion of broadcasts.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • organisational policies and broadcast studio procedures for setting up and operating within a broadcast production environment, including:
  • referring technical faults and problems to required personnel
  • setting up, checking and cleaning equipment
  • completing required documentation
  • handling surplus material
  • archiving material
  • conducting sound checks
  • collaborating with a range of personnel
  • issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of operating a broadcast studio panel in a live to air situation and strategies for addressing them
  • basic principles of audio mixing in a broadcast production environment, including how to maintain consistent audio levels throughout a radio broadcast
  • work health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to operating in a broadcast studio.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • a basic broadcast studio
  • production documentation
  • interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
