This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use investigative and critical thinking techniques to evaluate history and theory information and distil key themes and ideas.

It applies to individuals working in all areas of arts practice.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • use research and critical thinking techniques to evaluate theoretical and historical information and distil key themes and ideas
  • organise research materials and outcomes for application to own arts practice
  • use discussion with others to inform research ideas and methodology
  • identify and use opportunities to update knowledge information.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • identify sources of information about history and theory relating to own arts practice and the work of others
  • explain formal and informal research techniques
  • outline how information can be organised so that it can be easily accessed and applied to own arts practice.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant and current information services
  • opportunities for discussion and feedback.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
