Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1.Interpret designs

1.1 Confirm scope and nature of prop requirements with required personnel

1.2 Identify which prop construction methods and techniques will lead to the best realisation of design concepts

1.3 Discuss potential practical construction problems with required personnel

1.4 Take account of potential solutions and develop creative responses to problems and limitations

1.5 Discuss and confirm construction requirements with required personnel

2. Plan construction of props

2.1 Consider production and performance issues that may impact on prop construction

2.2 Consider safety and regulatory issues that may impact on the way props can be used

2.3 Produce accurate specifications and drawings to a level of detail that guide the construction process

2.4 Identify materials, tools and equipment required to construct props and provide cost estimates as required

3. Finalise prop construction plan

3.1 Compile all information and drawings into final prop construction plans

3.2 Confirm that plans meet aesthetic requirements and provide an appropriate visual interpretation of props

3.3 Reach agreement on plans and communicate practical details for prop construction to relevant personnel in a timely fashion in order to meet deadlines and manage workflow efficiently

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • translate design concepts into creative and workable plans to construct props for at least two different productions.

In the course above, the candidate must:

  • communicate effectively with designers and creative personnel
  • develop accurate specifications and drawings as the basis for prop construction tasks.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • issues and challenges that typically arise when developing prop construction plans
  • strategies to address issues with prop construction plans as they arise
  • techniques for creating prop construction plans and specifications from designs and other visual sources
  • construction methods used to achieve a range of commonly required prop effects
  • cost of materials typically used to construct props
  • work health and safety procedures relevant to the process of planning and constructing props.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • prop designs from which construction plans can be developed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
