Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1.1 Liaise with supervisor to determine the nature of props to be constructed

1.2 Select materials for prop construction according to instructions and intended use of prop items

1.3 Calculate correct quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible

1.4 Select equipment and tools according to materials being used and type of props being constructed

2. Construct simple props

2.1 Use techniques to construct props, including the safe use of adhesives

2.2 Complete the prop construction process in a logical manner

2.3 Follow safety procedures throughout the prop construction process

2.4 Work cooperatively with other team members to ensure team efficiency and quality of props items

3. Finalise prop construction

3.1 Identify problems with prop construction promptly and take action within scope of own responsibility or report to supervisor

3.2 Seek feedback on own construction techniques and note ways to improve own work performance

3.3 Contribute to evaluations of prop construction processes

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • use basic techniques, materials and equipment to construct simple props for at least one production
  • follow safety procedures
  • work cooperatively with others.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must describe:

  • properties and applications of materials commonly used for prop construction
  • types of tools and techniques commonly used for prop construction
  • safety and environmental issues associated with the use of tools, materials and adhesives
  • link between the intended use of a prop and the selection of materials and construction method.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to basic materials and equipment used in prop construction.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
